UNESCO Headquarters, the State and<br />

Commission dissem<strong>in</strong>ates UNESCO<br />
messages and promotes its ideals. It also<br />
implements UNESCO-related programmes<br />
to meet the specific needs and<br />
aspirations <strong>of</strong> Korea. The pr<strong>in</strong>cipal goals<br />
<strong>of</strong> the KNCU activities <strong>in</strong>clude promotion<br />
<strong>of</strong> education for <strong>in</strong>ternational understand<strong>in</strong>g<br />
and susta<strong>in</strong>able development.<br />

Pr<strong>of</strong>ile: The NPA was established <strong>in</strong><br />
1987 to protect and manage national<br />
parks efficiently. The central government<br />
established the NPA to manage park<br />
resources exclusively. The NPA’s ma<strong>in</strong><br />
activities are: preserv<strong>in</strong>g and protect<strong>in</strong>g<br />
natural resources <strong>in</strong> the parks; ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g<br />
facilities and controll<strong>in</strong>g litter; manag<strong>in</strong>g<br />
concessionaires; and collect<strong>in</strong>g<br />
entrance and facility fees. It is an <strong>IUCN</strong><br />
member.<br />

under the M<strong>in</strong>istry <strong>of</strong> Agriculture and<br />
Forestry and adm<strong>in</strong>isters forest laws. The<br />
Forestry Adm<strong>in</strong>istration supports and<br />
implements all types <strong>of</strong> forestry activities<br />
such as the formation <strong>of</strong> forest resources,<br />
protection and development <strong>of</strong> forests,<br />
forest management, utilization and<br />
development <strong>of</strong> forest products, research,<br />
and tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g. Under the Adm<strong>in</strong>istrator,<br />
the head <strong>of</strong> the Forestry Adm<strong>in</strong>istration,<br />
there are five bureaux and five Regional<br />
Forest Management Offices and Forestry<br />

Pr<strong>of</strong>ile: The Monument division designates,<br />
removes designation, protects and<br />
manages historic sites, historic and scenic<br />
sites and natural monuments. The<br />
Monument Division also prepares plans<br />
for the preservation <strong>of</strong> cultural properties.<br />
It supports the operations <strong>of</strong> the Cultural<br />
Properties Committee and the activities<br />
<strong>of</strong> its Third Sub-Committee (historic<br />
sites, historic and scenic sites and buried<br />
cultural properties) and Fifth Sub-<br />
Committee (natural monument and<br />
scenic sites).
