Pr<strong>of</strong>ile: With<strong>in</strong> GEF, the particular<br />
emphasis <strong>of</strong> UNDP is ensur<strong>in</strong>g the<br />
development and management <strong>of</strong><br />
capacity build<strong>in</strong>g programmes and<br />
technical assistance projects. As <strong>of</strong> June<br />
1999, the GEF/UNDP portfolio totals<br />
$863.4 million (not <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g $642.2<br />
million <strong>in</strong> co-f<strong>in</strong>anc<strong>in</strong>g). Over 500<br />
projects (not <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g Small Grants) <strong>in</strong><br />
the current portfolio range <strong>in</strong> size from<br />
$10,000 to $15 million, and they <strong>in</strong>volve<br />
constituents at every level from the grassroots<br />
to high-level decision makers. In<br />
addition, UNDP manages the Small<br />
Grants Programme (SGP) on behalf <strong>of</strong><br />
the GEF. Recently, 11 new countries<br />
were added to the SGP br<strong>in</strong>g<strong>in</strong>g the total<br />
number <strong>of</strong> participat<strong>in</strong>g countries to 46.<br />

(IFC)<br />
The IFC provides loans at below-market<br />
<strong>in</strong>terest rates. The IFC was established to<br />
assist private sector corporations<br />
<strong>in</strong>terested <strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong>vest<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> develop<strong>in</strong>g<br />
countries but discouraged by the high<br />
<strong>in</strong>terest rates <strong>in</strong> those countries. It can<br />
provide a useful source <strong>of</strong> f<strong>in</strong>ance for<br />
privately run protected areas or concessions<br />
<strong>in</strong> develop<strong>in</strong>g countries. It may also<br />
assist protected areas to identify<br />
additional sources <strong>of</strong> f<strong>in</strong>ance for nonprivate<br />
sector <strong>in</strong>vestments. F<strong>in</strong>ally, IFC<br />
fund<strong>in</strong>g can be used to match GEF grants<br />
or other multilateral and bilateral<br />
donations.<br />
