environmental problems. IFCE has an<br />

<strong>of</strong>fice <strong>in</strong> Beij<strong>in</strong>g, Ch<strong>in</strong>a.<br />

IFCE develops projects primarily <strong>in</strong><br />

three areas: environmental education,<br />

nature conservation and technological<br />

and <strong>in</strong>formation transfer. In nature<br />

conservation, IFCE co-operates with the<br />

Wildlife Detection Center <strong>of</strong> the M<strong>in</strong>istry<br />

<strong>of</strong> Forestry <strong>of</strong> Ch<strong>in</strong>a and Ch<strong>in</strong>ese<br />

Wildlife Association to preserve the<br />

Siberian tigers and other endangered<br />

animals and species. IFCE is also cooperat<strong>in</strong>g<br />

with agencies <strong>in</strong> Ch<strong>in</strong>a <strong>in</strong><br />

nature reserve management, air and water<br />

pollution control and solid wastes and<br />

hazardous materials treatment, etc.<br />

Pr<strong>of</strong>ile: <strong>IUCN</strong> was founded <strong>in</strong> 1948 and<br />

br<strong>in</strong>gs together states, government<br />

agencies and NGOs <strong>in</strong> a unique global<br />

partnership. <strong>IUCN</strong>’s mission is to<br />

<strong>in</strong>fluence, encourage and assist societies<br />

throughout the world to conserve the<br />

<strong>in</strong>tegrity and diversity <strong>of</strong> nature and to<br />

ensure that any use <strong>of</strong> natural resources is<br />

equitable and ecologically susta<strong>in</strong>able.<br />

The establishment and long-term management<br />

<strong>of</strong> protected areas is a major<br />

concern <strong>of</strong> <strong>IUCN</strong> and its World<br />

Commission on <strong>Protected</strong> <strong>Areas</strong><br />

(WCPA), which has a global network <strong>of</strong><br />

over 1,300 <strong>of</strong> the world’s lead<strong>in</strong>g experts<br />

on various aspects protected areas.<br />

<strong>IUCN</strong> also organises the World Parks<br />

Congresses, held <strong>in</strong> various parts <strong>of</strong> the<br />

world every 10 years or so.<br />

Projects <strong>in</strong> <strong>East</strong> <strong>Asia</strong>: follow<strong>in</strong>g on from<br />

the <strong>East</strong> <strong>Asia</strong> Regional Action Plan for<br />

<strong>Protected</strong> <strong>Areas</strong>, developed by the<br />

WCPA <strong>East</strong> <strong>Asia</strong> members, four projects<br />

have been developed:
