Pr<strong>of</strong>ile: The Ch<strong>in</strong>a Programme was<br />

established <strong>in</strong> September 1996 and an<br />

<strong>of</strong>fice is ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong>ed <strong>in</strong> Beij<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

Particularly noteworthy activities<br />

<strong>in</strong>clude: survey tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g courses at<br />

Poyong Lake, a long-term study <strong>of</strong> the<br />

Yangtze Estuary, the publication <strong>of</strong><br />

awareness materials <strong>in</strong> co-operation with<br />

WWF-Hong Kong, and the translation <strong>of</strong><br />

the Wetlands <strong>Directory</strong> <strong>in</strong>to Ch<strong>in</strong>ese.<br />

Wetlands International-<strong>Asia</strong> Pacific<br />

works closely with the Government <strong>of</strong><br />

Ch<strong>in</strong>a and other NGOs <strong>in</strong> develop<strong>in</strong>g a<br />

long-term plan for wetland conservation<br />

and management <strong>in</strong> Ch<strong>in</strong>a, and helps<br />

develop a multi-sectoral National<br />

Wetland Action Plan, <strong>in</strong>volv<strong>in</strong>g 16<br />

different m<strong>in</strong>istries and departments.<br />

Other major projects <strong>in</strong>clude the<br />

development <strong>of</strong> a national Wetland<br />

biodiversity conservation and susta<strong>in</strong>able<br />

use project for UNDP-GEF, and <strong>in</strong>itiatives<br />

for the conservation <strong>of</strong> mangroves<br />

<strong>in</strong> Guangdong and Ha<strong>in</strong>an Prov<strong>in</strong>ces.<br />

Hong Kong: Wetlands International has<br />

been <strong>in</strong>volved <strong>in</strong> a detailed assessment <strong>of</strong><br />

the importance for waterbirds <strong>of</strong> the Mai<br />

Po Ramsar site and Deep Bay, and has<br />

provided advice on management <strong>of</strong> the<br />

area. A programme <strong>of</strong> research and<br />

conservation for the Ch<strong>in</strong>ese Egret is also<br />

supported. (see also Wetlands<br />

Pr<strong>of</strong>ile: The WWF Ch<strong>in</strong>a Programme<br />

was established <strong>in</strong> 1980 and took up<br />

residence <strong>in</strong> Beij<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> 1996. WWF<br />

supports field-based demonstration<br />

projects, policy research, and capacity<br />

build<strong>in</strong>g for <strong>in</strong>dividuals and <strong>in</strong>stitutions.<br />

WWF Ch<strong>in</strong>a is currently work<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> six<br />

programme areas: species and protected<br />

areas, wetlands conservation, forest<br />

conservation, environmental education,<br />

energy and climate change, and ecoregion<br />

based conservation. By focus<strong>in</strong>g<br />

on conservation <strong>of</strong> the Giant Panda,<br />

WWF Ch<strong>in</strong>a’s Species and <strong>Protected</strong><br />

<strong>Areas</strong> Programme also helps to protect<br />

all the rich biota <strong>of</strong> this species’<br />

temperate forest home. Relevant projects<br />

<strong>in</strong>clude <strong>in</strong>tegrated conservation and<br />

development <strong>in</strong> Sichuan’s P<strong>in</strong>gwu<br />

County, biodiversity monitor<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong><br />

Sichuan’s Giant Panda reserves, a<br />

national survey <strong>of</strong> the Giant Panda and its<br />

habitat, GIS database development, and a<br />

pilot project on effective management <strong>of</strong><br />

Giant Panda Reserves. (see also WWF –<br />
