Pr<strong>of</strong>ile: JICA has made preservation and<br />

Pr<strong>of</strong>ile: The Japanese Association <strong>of</strong><br />
Zoological Gardens and Aquariums was<br />
established <strong>in</strong> 1939 as a voluntary<br />
organisation. In November 1965, the<br />
Social Education Bureau <strong>of</strong> the M<strong>in</strong>istry<br />
<strong>of</strong> Education became the Association’s<br />
competent authority. Their ma<strong>in</strong> aim is<br />
the conservation <strong>of</strong> wildlife ex-situ. The<br />
Species Survival Committee <strong>of</strong> JAZGA<br />
(SSC-J) was established <strong>in</strong> 1988<br />
(members: 97 zoos and 66 aquaria, as at<br />
03/99). The SSC-J aims to contribute to<br />
culture by promot<strong>in</strong>g development <strong>of</strong><br />
zoos and aquaria with the co-operation <strong>of</strong><br />
all these establishements <strong>in</strong> Japan. SSC-J<br />
ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong>s a studbook <strong>of</strong> 137 species <strong>in</strong><br />
captivity. It is an <strong>IUCN</strong> member.<br />
