<strong>Directory</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Protected</strong> <strong>Areas</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>East</strong> <strong>Asia</strong>: People, Organisations and Places<br />
The summarised def<strong>in</strong>itions <strong>of</strong> the protected area management categories are as<br />
follows:<br />
CATEGORY Ia: Strict Nature Reserve – Area <strong>of</strong> land and/or sea possess<strong>in</strong>g some<br />
outstand<strong>in</strong>g or representative ecosystems, geological or physiological features<br />
and/or species, available primarily for scientific research and/or environmental<br />
monitor<strong>in</strong>g.<br />
CATEGORY Ib: Wilderness Area – Large area <strong>of</strong> unmodified or slightly modified<br />
land, and/or sea, reta<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g its natural character and <strong>in</strong>fluence, without permanent or<br />
significant habitation, which is protected and managed so as to preserve its natural<br />
condition.<br />
CATEGORY II: National Park – Natural area <strong>of</strong> land and/or sea, designated to (a)<br />
protect the ecological <strong>in</strong>tegrity <strong>of</strong> one or more ecosystems for present and future<br />
generations, (b) exclude exploitation or occupation <strong>in</strong>imical to the purposes <strong>of</strong><br />
designation <strong>of</strong> the area and (c) provide a foundation for spiritual, scientific, educational,<br />
recreational and visitor opportunities, all <strong>of</strong> which must be environmentally<br />
and culturally compatible.<br />
CATEGORY III: Natural Monument – Area conta<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g one, or more, specific<br />
natural or natural/cultural feature which is <strong>of</strong> outstand<strong>in</strong>g or unique value because<br />
<strong>of</strong> its <strong>in</strong>herent rarity, representative or aesthetic qualities or cultural significance.<br />
CATEGORY IV: Habitat/Species Management Area – Area <strong>of</strong> land and/or sea<br />
subject to active <strong>in</strong>tervention for management purposes so as to ensure the ma<strong>in</strong>tenance<br />
<strong>of</strong> habitats and/or to meet the requirements <strong>of</strong> specific species.<br />
CATEGORY V: <strong>Protected</strong> Landscape/ Seascape – Area <strong>of</strong> land, with coast and sea<br />
as appropriate, where the <strong>in</strong>teraction <strong>of</strong> people and nature over time has produced<br />
an area <strong>of</strong> dist<strong>in</strong>ct character with significant aesthetic, ecological and/or cultural<br />
value, and <strong>of</strong>ten with high biological diversity. Safeguard<strong>in</strong>g the <strong>in</strong>tegrity <strong>of</strong> this<br />
traditional <strong>in</strong>teraction is vital to the protection, ma<strong>in</strong>tenance and evolution <strong>of</strong> such<br />
an area.<br />
CATEGORY VI: Managed Resource <strong>Protected</strong> Area – Area conta<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g predom<strong>in</strong>antly<br />
unmodified natural systems, managed to ensure long term protection<br />
and ma<strong>in</strong>tenance <strong>of</strong> biological diversity, while provid<strong>in</strong>g at the same time a<br />
susta<strong>in</strong>able flow <strong>of</strong> natural products and services to meet community needs.<br />
