The METF is established as two parallel<br />

legal entities outside government: a<br />

non-pr<strong>of</strong>it foundation <strong>in</strong> the Netherlands,<br />

and a registered <strong>of</strong>fice, legally established<br />

as an NGO, <strong>in</strong> Mongolia.<br />

The Scientific and Technical Advisory<br />

Committee (STAC) advises the Board on<br />

the feasibility and environmental impact<br />

<strong>of</strong> projects proposed for fund<strong>in</strong>g and on<br />

ways to <strong>in</strong>crease participation by local<br />

people <strong>in</strong> METF activities. The Board is<br />

also responsible for sett<strong>in</strong>g guidel<strong>in</strong>es to<br />

evaluate these projects.<br />

conservation <strong>of</strong> the Mongolian gazelle<br />

and <strong>of</strong> biodiversity <strong>in</strong> general <strong>in</strong><br />

Mongolia. It is <strong>in</strong>volved <strong>in</strong> the UNDP/<br />

GEF Mongolian <strong>East</strong>ern Steppe<br />

Biodiversity Project (see above) and the<br />

implementation <strong>of</strong> the Conservation<br />

Biology and Migration <strong>of</strong> the Mongolian<br />

Gazelle Sub-project from 1999–2001, <strong>in</strong><br />

co-operation with the Wildlife<br />

Conservation Society (WCS). All activities<br />

are performed <strong>in</strong> co-operation with<br />

the <strong>East</strong>ern Steppe <strong>Protected</strong> <strong>Areas</strong><br />

Adm<strong>in</strong>istration.<br />

Pr<strong>of</strong>ile: The Mongolian Green<br />

Movement is a non-government, nonpr<strong>of</strong>it<br />

organisation. The organisation<br />

promotes the protection <strong>of</strong> nature through<br />

various leaflets and other publications<br />

with the aim <strong>of</strong> sensitis<strong>in</strong>g people to the<br />

need to protect nature and protected<br />

areas. They also collaborate with other<br />

<strong>in</strong>ternational NGOs for the conservation<br />

<strong>of</strong> nature <strong>in</strong> Mongolia and globally.<br />

Assistance is provided from <strong>in</strong>ternational<br />

organisations. MGM is work<strong>in</strong>g<br />

with organisations, such as <strong>IUCN</strong>, to<br />

realise a project to protect Huvsugul<br />

Lake; 60% <strong>of</strong> all Mongolian clear water<br />

resources flow from it <strong>in</strong>to the Arctic and<br />

Pacific Oceans.<br />
