Characters. - -<br />

Syn: Apseudes talpa, Lilljeb. (not Mont,).<br />

Body very slender and elongated, gradually tapering<br />

behind. Cephalosome distinctly areolated above, with a slight notch on each side<br />

in front of the middle, rostral plate cordiform, defined on each side by a distinct<br />

notch, and terminating in an acute, somewhat deflexed point. Ocular lobes well-<br />

defined, outer part slightly tumefied, and armed anteriorly with a short pointed<br />

prominence. Free segments of inesosome defined by deep constrictions, and having<br />

the upper face slightly tubercular. 1st pair of coxal plates of moderate size,<br />

spiniform, and pointing obliquely outwards,<br />

the others rather small and rounded.<br />

Antero-lateral corners of the 5 posterior segments produced to triangularly pointed,<br />

setiferous projections. Metasome very narrow, with the epimera of the 5 anterior<br />

segments produced to spiniform projections densely clothed with long ciliated<br />

bristles, terminal segment narrow and elongated, equalling in length<br />

combined, subcylindrical in form and furnished laterally<br />

the other 5<br />

with numerous small<br />

setiferous nodules. Eyes imperfectly developed, with opaque whitish pigment and<br />

devoid of any distinct visual elements. Superior antennae rather elongated, 1st<br />

joint of the peduncle attenuated distally and finely serrated in the proximal half<br />

of the inner edge, flagellum fully as long as the peduncle and 16 20-articulate,<br />

accessory appendage about half as long,<br />

and 8 9-articulate. Inferior antennae<br />

with the flagellum longer than the peduncle. Chelipeds in female rather robust,<br />

scarcely smaller than the fossorial legs, basal joint fusiform, with a strong denti-<br />

form projection on the posterior edge beyond the middle, hand much larger than<br />

the carpus, oblong ovate in form, thumb with a distinct tubercle in the middle<br />

of the inner edge; those in male with the hand very large and tumid, both the<br />

thumb and the dactylus strongly tubercular inside. Uropoda very much elongated,<br />

attaining almost half the length of the body, inner ramus composed<br />

of about 30<br />

articulations, outer ramus scarcely Ys as long and 1 2-articulate. Colour whitish.<br />

Length reaching to 13 mm.<br />

Remarks. - - The present species was briefly described by my late father<br />

in the year 1858 as Rhwa spinosa, but was subsequently, by most authors, identi-
