The print and Braille formats were distributed by the participating<br />

organisations between March 2004 and June 2004 with the exception of the ABWA<br />

which were distributed in August. As noted in Figure 7.1 the total number of print<br />

and Braille surveys distributed was 4428.<br />

In terms of costs, the <strong>University</strong> funded the supply, printing and return postage costs<br />

of the reply-paid envelopes. The reply-paid envelopes incorporated a bar code which<br />

allowed Australia Post to charge the <strong>University</strong> only for the surveys which were<br />

returned. The <strong>University</strong> also allowed for the Braille surveys to be printed on the<br />

Braille embosser and for the boxes of the surveys to be sent to the various<br />

organisations for distribution. Personal costs included the printing of the print-based<br />

surveys and the envelopes for the surveys to be posted. In addition, personal costs<br />

included the postage and time incurred by the various organisations for posting the<br />

surveys with the exception of Retina Australia http://www.bca.org.au/vip-l.htm<br />

(Queensland) and the WARPF who both waived the postage distribution costs to<br />

help support this study.<br />

7.2.4 Response to the survey<br />

A total of 512 surveys were returned, of which 369 were deemed to be valid survey<br />

responses. Most of the invalid surveys were either returned as blank or had less than<br />

50% of the questions completed. However, most surveys that were over 50%<br />
