Caldwell would have its shorttitle set to Caldwell.<br />

Use this field for abbreviated case names which are<br />

those that any lawyer would naturally understand<br />

without explanation.<br />

shorthand Optional. A shorter title of the case which will be<br />

introduced the first time the case is cited in any reference<br />

section, and thereafter used in place of the full<br />

title, and will be listed in any table of abbreviations.<br />

Use this field sparingly.<br />

date Mandatory. The date which it is appropriate to use<br />

in the citation of the report you will be using, which<br />

may or may not be the actual date of the decision.<br />

Only the year is required (except for some unreported<br />

cases, where <strong>oscola</strong> requires a full date). See page 11<br />

for information about how to enter dates.<br />

origdate Optional. The date of the decision itself if it is different<br />

from the date being given in the date field, and<br />

sufficiently important to matter.<br />

number Optional, but sometimes required for correct citation.<br />

This field is used for any number which forms an essential<br />

part of the case’s citation. Its exact use varies<br />

depending on the type of case. For English, Scottish,<br />

Australian and Canadian cases it is the full neutral<br />

citation, if there is one. For eu cases it is the case<br />

number; for US cases the docket number (Note that<br />

neutralcite may also be used: it functions as a synonym<br />

for number.)<br />

keywords Multiple keywords can be given; but the keywords<br />

field<br />

should always include at least one ‘country’ indication.<br />

court Optional. This gives the court which decided the case.<br />

It is normally printed only if required. 22 For instance,<br />

in an English case which has a neutral citation the<br />

information will not be printed, since the neutral citation<br />

provides it anyway. Similarly with an eu case.<br />

(Note that internally court is a synonyn for the ‘institution’<br />

field, which you may use if you prefer.)<br />

reporter Mandatory, except for unreported cases. The title of<br />

the series of reports to which you are citing. (The<br />

reporter field is a synonym for journaltitle, which<br />

you may use if you prefer.)<br />

22 Not quite true. The package is pretty good at working out whether it is required for English<br />

and European citations; but it ‘knows less’ about non-English citations, and will generally use<br />

any information it is given when printing them.<br />
