Chapter - 5 Final Report: <strong>Arani</strong> <strong>Municipal</strong>ity<br />
1. Upgradation and extension of Regional linkages<br />
Extension of the National Highway connecting <strong>Arani</strong> with Vellore and Tiruvannamalai will<br />
support the growth and development of regional economic activities. Further, provision of<br />
railway connectivity to the town would enhance export of handloom garments to National<br />
and International markets.<br />
2. Establishment hi-tech weaving parks by Go TN in Tiruvannamalai district.<br />
The GoTN has initiated the centrally-sponsored integrated handloom cluster development<br />
programme in Tiruvannamalai at a cost of Rs. 2 crore. Under the programme, basic<br />
infrastructure for weaving would be created to ensure continuous employment for handloom<br />
weavers and to improve their overall socio-economic status.<br />
3. Need for exposure to international trends and access to international markets<br />
Marketing Promotion Programmes like publicity and<br />
exhibitions, setting up of marketing complexes,<br />
participation in trade fairs, increasing capacity<br />
building in entrepreneurship and marketing skill of<br />
weavers will open new marketing avenues in the<br />
National level.<br />
Weavers societies with the aid of GoTN could also aim<br />
to supply finished products to organizations like Fab<br />
India, Crafts Council of India , which are striving to<br />
promote traditional handloom textiles in the International market.<br />
ìGoTN has proposed to develop 500 new designs in coordination with the National Institute<br />
of Design, Ahmedabad, for introducing the same in weavers cooperative societies at a cost<br />
of 25 lakh. A market survey would be conducted through a professional agency to explore<br />
the possibility of marketing silk products. To upgrade the skill of weavers/designers engaged<br />
in the handloom industry and to improve the skill of managers of the societies, training would<br />
be imparted to 1200 persons in the current year.î- The HINDU.<br />
4. Setting up of Design Libraries<br />
As per the announcement made during this Departmentís Demand on the floor of the<br />
Legislative Assembly on 19.4.2007, Design Libraries were established at 4 Handloom<br />
Production Centres in Kancheepuram, Salem, Coimbatore, Madurai and at Commissionerate<br />
of Handlooms and Textiles, Chennai. As <strong>Arani</strong> one of the major silk production center, Design<br />
Library can also be setup in <strong>Arani</strong> with collection of<br />
wide range of designs to provide design input to the<br />
weavers.<br />
5. Development of Support Network for social<br />
development<br />
There are lot of support institutions and schemes to<br />
supplement weaving activities. The Institutions like<br />
Weavers Service Centre, Co-optex, National Institute<br />

Cluster Improvement workshop<br />
of Design are in place to support the Handloom Cluster in Tamil Nadu. One could also see<br />
academic Institutions for importing textile technology. Development of such Supportive<br />
