ACCOMPLISHMENTS IN FY 2010<br />

• July/August 2009 - Beneficiary consultations<br />

statewide were held on the<br />

proposed 2009 – 2011 Native Hawaiian<br />

Development Program Plan (NHDPP),<br />

which included the introduction of the<br />

Kūlia i ka Nu‘u program; <strong>ma</strong>terial on<br />

the NHDPP was sent to over 15,000<br />

beneficiaries<br />

• September 2009 - Hawaiian Homes<br />

Commission approves the 2009 – 2011<br />

NHDPP and the Kūlia i ka Nu‘u program<br />

• November/December 2009 - Kūlia i ka<br />

Nu‘u program orientation meetings held<br />

statewide<br />

• Over 20 organizational capacity building<br />

training sessions were held statewide<br />

covering topics such as board governance,<br />

strategic planning, nonprofit budgeting, and<br />

community economic development<br />

• January 2010 - DHHL hosted a Leaders<br />

Conference themed “Building UNITY in<br />

CommUNITY” on O‘ahu. This 2 1/2 –day<br />

conference brought together 175 leaders<br />

from over 45 homestead associations and<br />

beneficiary organizations and featured<br />

13 training sessions (including a session<br />

on the legislative process held on-site at<br />

the State Capitol). DHHL partnered<br />

with the state Department of Business,<br />

Economic Development and Tourism<br />

(DBEDT) Community-Based Economic<br />

Development (CBED) program.<br />

• DHHL received $ 25,000 in scholarships<br />

from NeighborWorks, a national nonprofit,<br />

for staff and homestead leaders to attend a<br />

national Community Leadership Institute<br />

in Milwau<strong>ke</strong>e, Wisconsin.<br />

• Four beneficiary organizations received<br />

Kūlia i ka Nu‘u certifications:<br />

o Hawai‘i: Kaniohale Community<br />

• O‘ahu: Kapolei Community Development<br />

• Two organizations received grant awards of<br />

up to $250,000 for Community Economic<br />

Development projects:<br />

• Kapolei Community Development<br />

Corporation to develop a 5-acre parcel as a<br />

commercial center<br />

• La‘i ‘Ōpua 2020 to develop a 26-acre parcel<br />

as a commercial center<br />

• Ten organizations completed the<br />

Organizational Assessment process, which<br />

establishes a baseline of the organization’s<br />

capacity and identifies capacity areas to<br />

build on and strengthen<br />
