Towards achieving this goal, LMD has focused<br />

on the quality of its tenants in an effort to secure<br />

financially stable long term business partners<br />

with a proven track record for success.<br />

LMD is also being proactive in its approach<br />

to not only <strong>ma</strong>intain, but to increase revenues<br />

for the trust. One of the innovative ways in<br />

which LMD believes that it can achieve this is<br />

through clean-energy. In supporting the State’s<br />

clean-energy initiatives, LMD has enhanced its<br />

economic opportunities by identifying its lands<br />

throughout the state that have the potential for<br />

renewable energy projects such as garbage to<br />

energy, solar or wind farms. It is LMD’s goal<br />

in this endeavor to continue to work towards<br />

financial self-sufficiency, as well as be a leader in<br />

green energy sustainability in the state.<br />

Significant Events<br />

The Hawaiian Homes Commission (HHC) approved<br />

a renewable energy project on Hawaiian<br />

home lands in Kalaeloa. LMD is expected to<br />

execute a general lease with is currently in negotiations<br />

with Kalaeloa Solar One. LLC., a<br />

wholly-owned subsidiary of Sopogy, Inc., for<br />

use of approxi<strong>ma</strong>tely 35 acres of land for a concentrated<br />

solar project, which is expected to<br />

produce approxi<strong>ma</strong>tely 4.5 mega watts (MW)<br />

of electrical power that can be sold to Hawaiian<br />

Electric Company, Inc.<br />

The Hawaiian Homes Commission (HHC)<br />

approved a renewable energy project on<br />

Hawaiian home lands in Kalaeloa. Lease negotiation<br />

is on-going with AES Solar Power,<br />

LLC, to use approxi<strong>ma</strong>tely 29 acres of lands<br />

for a ground-mounted solar PV project, which<br />

is also projected to produce approxi<strong>ma</strong>tely 4-5<br />

mega watts (MW) of electrical power that can<br />

be sold to Hawaiian Electric, Inc.<br />

LMD has been working with the Hawaiian<br />

home lands communities that had been qualified<br />

and certified under the Kūlia I Ka Nu‘u<br />

program, such as Laiopua 2020 and Kapolei<br />

Community Development Corp., to provide<br />

them with long term general leases for their<br />

community projects and commercial projects.<br />

LMD continues to support the Land<br />

Development Division by issuing construction<br />

Right-of-Entry Permits and License Easements<br />

for utilities to various agencies of the County<br />

of Maui for the Kēō<strong>ke</strong>a, Waiohuli, Leiali‘i, and<br />

Wai‘ehu Kou subdivision developments.<br />

LMD continues to support the Kahikinui Road<br />

Improvement project with an annual budget of<br />

$100,000 to provide residents of this remote<br />

homestead community located on the south<br />

east slopes of Haleakala, with better access to<br />

their lots.<br />

LMD continues to support the Land<br />

Development Division by <strong>ma</strong>intaining previously<br />

issued license easements to various county<br />

and private agencies for the installation, operation<br />

and <strong>ma</strong>intenance of utilities within Lana`i<br />

island’s only homestead subdivision.
