2005. Conrad said Hamburg Süd had to
digest enormous cost increases in 2006.
He said the fleet consumed 1.6 million
tons of fuel costing EUR 500 million,
twice as much as in 2005.
Hamburg Süd predicted more global
high growth ahead and the danger of tonnage
saturation. Like the VDR however, it
noted plans by shipping companies to
reduce ship speeds to cut bunker consumption
and concluded that “a general
overcapacity in the market is not to be
expected”.
Cut-backs for Senator Lines
Last September Senator Lines announced
service and job cutbacks in response to a
“continuously problematic market situation”,
along with declining rates and operational
cost increases on Europe–Asia
routes.
It closed six loss-making liner services
and re-structured around a new profitable
schedule with twelve liner services while
retaining its Europe–Asia speciality.
The cut-backs came after three profit-
making years for Senator in the wake of a

ships have been introduced”. He said

for what he called “this unacceptable
development”.
Weekly links
The new concept went into effect at the
start of this year and already Senator is
expanding again, adding a new Europe–
South America ESX service to the current
schedule of twelve regular services.
Six 2,700 TEU container ships are now
offering weekly links between northern
Europe and the east coast of South America
and Senator is co-operating with K-Line,
China Shipping, Hatsu Marine and Maruba.
CEO Mohr said ESX was “not just a further
service for our customers: it also indicates
that we are off to a flying start again
and that, following our internal reorganisation,
we can concentrate fully on the market
and on our services”.
