placing orders for completely new vessels.
LJL’s tramp carriers mostly operate outside
Europe.
The Limarko Shipping Company (LLK)
has bought a reefer named the Capella
(built in 1993 in Japan) with a DWT of
8,045. The maximum speed of the new
ship is 18 knots and the ship is one of the
largest vessels in LLK’s fleet. The company
Thus, one should not think
that the Lithuanian flag
is very good for a shipowner.
also bought the Siuita, a dry cargo vessel,
from the parent company. The Siuita and
the Serenada, a container vessel, are the
company’s only ships classified as “other
type” besides 14 reefers. However, LLK
intends to expand its activities to maritime
transport spheres other than reefer transport.
LLK plans to buy a reefer and a dry
cargo vessel or a container vessel this year.
Until now the company has been primarily
engaged in the carriage of refrigerat-
ed articles of food. For example, a contract
was entered into with Excelban for transportation
of bananas from Ecuador to
Europe on two fast ships. Over two years,
Limarko’s main transportation region has
shifted from Africa to Europe. The relative
importance of Europe as a transportation
region has grown from 39 per cent in 2004
to 68 per cent in 2006. At the same time,
the African share has decreased from 49
per cent to 25 per cent. The relative share
of both Asia and America as transportation
regions is a couple of per centage points.
Under new names
Lisco Baltic Services changed its name to
DFDS Lisco last summer. In addition to
the rail ferry Klaipeda and the ferry Palanga,
which were sold at the beginning of last
year, the company also has sold the Tor
Neringa that, after the change of flag, is
chartered on DFDS Tor Line’s Immingham
line. Successful cargo traffic on the
Klaipeda–Karlshamn line, as well as the
Klaipeda–Copenhagen–Fredericia line, was
handed over to the parent company.
Kursiu Linija, a container vessel operator,
lost its name after having been bought
by Icelandic Eimskip. Then the Kursiu Linija,
a company that operates four container
lines, was merged with Containerships and
the former offices of Kursiu Linija were
renamed as Containerships Lithuania and
Containerships Latvia.
Three-level maritime education
In Klaipeda professional maritime qualifications
can be obtained at the Maritime
Institute of Klaipeda University, the
Lithuanian Maritime College and the
Klaipeda Maritime School. While there
are still plenty of those wishing to study
maritime specialties at the university, the
same cannot be said about the Maritime
School.
There are still more Lithuanian seamen
than jobs on Lithuanian vessels. Then
again, the renewal of the fleet will not
increase the number of jobs, even though
the aggregate tonnage has grown. As of the
beginning of this year, 68 cargo and passenger
vessels were registered with the
Lithuanian Ship Register with a total GT of
399,762. Reefers represent one third of the
aggregate number of vessels.
