be seen, but a government proposal for the
future shipping tax regime will definitely
have a significant impact on the future
development of the Swedish merchant
marine.
Recruitment efforts
An escalating problem for Swedish
shipowners, as for shipowners in most
shipping nations, is the mounting lack of
qualified seafarers. Foreign shipping companies
are increasing their recruitment
efforts at the two Swedish maritime academies
in Göteborg and Kalmar.
Also as in most countries the short supply
of experienced engineers is the most
acute problem. Swedish Shipowner’s
Employer Association, SEA, has launched
a number of initiatives at several levels.
A recruitment campaign to attract
youngsters to the maritime academies has
been launched and shore-gone marine
engineers are encouraged to return to sea
by an information campaign, and by ship-
ping companies paying for the refreshment
courses needed to renew certificates of
competence.
SEA has also initiated a project in which
one of Atlantic Container Line’s ro-lo carriers,
the Atlantic Cartier, trading on North
Atlantic routes, will be transformed to also
being a school vessel. Atlantic Cartier will
be rebuilt and equipped to cater for 12–15
future marine engineer students and their
teachers.
