Mitropoulos and Dimas agree
on environmental challenges
IMO Secretary-general Efthimios E
Mitropoulos and the European Commissioner
for the Environment, Stavros
Dimas, agreed on a common approach to
ensure global solutions to the environmental
challenges. During a meeting in Brussels
at the end of April, they discussed regulatory
developments at IMO concerning the
reduction of emissions of ships, ship recy-
The hostage taking in Nigeria has
escalated. On May 3, no fewer than
21 expatriates were abducted at different
locations in less than twelve hours. Early
morning, the FPSO Mystras, owned by Italian
oil company Agip, was attacked. Eight
foreigners, including five Europeans, were
kidnapped. They were moved to a different
location and released six hours later. At the
same time eleven Koreans working for Shell
were abducted from a power station under
construction. A few days earlier, militants
to ratify the environmental conventions
adopted by IMO.
Stavros Dimas stated that the EU members
Fake PiLot StatioN iN NigeRia The international shipping organisation Bimco
warns shipowners to be aware of fake pilot stations in Nigeria. A vessel waiting off
Lagos was contacted on channel 16 by a station identifying itself as Lagos Pilot Station.
The caller instructed the vessel to proceed 0.5 nautical miles off the fairway buoy to pick
up a pilot. The master grew suspicious and contacted the agent, who confirmed that no
berth was yet available and advised the vessel to be wary of such fake pilot stations.
Militants attack oil workers in Nigeria
forced their way onto the FSO Oloibiri and
kidnapped six Chevron workers. Nigeria is
Africa’s leading oil exporter, usually exporting
around two million barrels daily.
Unrest has plagued Nigeria’s oil-rich
southern delta region for years, and in recent
months armed militants have stepped up
a campaign against the oil industry, blowing
up oil pipelines and kidnapping foreign
workers. The latest statistics claims that the
production is cut by close to 700,000 barrels
per day due to the militants’ attacks.
Slight increase
in Baltic oil spills
Oil spills detected in the Baltic Sea
increased slightly in 2006 to 236
illicit spills, compared to 224 discharges in
2005, according to fresh statistics from Helcom.
Even with this increase, the number
of detected oil spills is only half of those
detected in 1999, when 488 spills where
detected. Of the 236 spills in 2006, only
one was larger than 100 cubic metres and
two larger than 10 cubic metres.
