seafarers and officers as well as collaborate
with Polish repair yards.
Another foreign player is Star Reefers
that has moved some of its technical management
and manning operations from
London to Gdynia.
Substantial investments
Polish shipowners are investing substantially
in their fleet renewals and expansion
plans. Polsteam has launched an ambitious
fleet renewal programme which stretches
until 2015, covering 34 new vessels, mainly
bulk carriers ranging from 34,000 DWT to
76,000 DWT. The total investment is calculated
to USD 700–800 million. Ten handysize
bulkers have been ordered from Xingang
Shipyard in China and the last units
will be delivered during 2009. Six more
have been ordered from Hantong Shipyard
in China.
At the start of the year, Polsteam had a
fleet of some 75 vessels. The company
employs 2,700 seagoing staff and 260
shore-based employees.

million compared to the year before.
Also Chipholbrok, the Sino-Polish jointventure,
has launched a major ship investment
programme covering six new 30,000
DWT multipurpose heavy-lift vessels. The
series has been ordered from the Hantong
shipyard near Shanghai in China. Two
high-capacity cranes will be able to handle
heavy and over-dimensioned cargo units
up to 640 tons. The order is worth USD
296 million and deliveries are expected
during 2008–2011.
Also Euroafrica, established as a result of
privatisation in 1991 and today the second
largest shipping company in Poland, has
decided to modernise its fleet. The company
operates in liner services to West Africa,
UK, Finland and Sweden. The company is
in the second-hand market for a number of
ships.

also carry 45 ft containers.

confirmed an order for two ro-pax ferries
to be built by SSN in Szczecin. The 3,000lane
metre vessels will be delivered in
2010/2011 and the deal also comprises
options for a further two vessels.
