If the term “Norwegian” were defined to
shipping operations with corporate, commercial
or technical management in the
country, the NSA figures could be doubled.
That would also give a much more
realistic impression of what is going on in
the shipping community.
Everything is possible
The shipping industry has become more
attractive to young people over the last
years.
A new generation of shipping professionals
are coming up through the ranks;
often well-educated people not burdened
by the trauma of the shipping crisis; people
with an international outlook who see the
opportunities – not the problems – of
operating out of Norway.
Here is everything: Brokers and consultants,
investors and shipping banks, competence
and network; none of which particularly
expensive. There is a different sentiment
around: Everything is possible.

Typically, YoungShip, an organization of
young shipping professionals up to the age
of 35, has grown to 800 members in
Bergen and Oslo over three years. Of these,
a third are women.
Compared to finance and offshore, shipping
appears to have regained much of its
lost ground. Shipping companies are
reporting of motivated and qualified applicants
to every position offered, while students
are flocking to bachelor courses in
shipping, logistics and international trade.
