(l) use designated student parking areas. <strong>St</strong>udents are not<br />
usually allowed access to <strong>the</strong> <strong>Faculty</strong>’s car parks, however,<br />
students who have a physical disability or o<strong>the</strong>rwise<br />
unable to use <strong>the</strong> <strong>University</strong> car park because <strong>of</strong> a medical<br />
condition may apply to <strong>the</strong> <strong>Faculty</strong> Office for a special<br />
permit; and<br />
(m) adhere to <strong>the</strong> <strong>Faculty</strong>’s non-smoking policy in building or<br />
o<strong>the</strong>r enclosed areas.<br />

CODE OF CONDUCT<br />
Preamble<br />
This code has been granted in line with what is believed to be<br />
staff and students’ general perceptions on what may or may not<br />
be considered appropriate conduct, and has been formulated<br />
through constant consultation with representatives <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />
relevant groups. This has been done in recognition <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> fact<br />
that <strong>the</strong> faculty and its environs should be associated or seen as<br />
being synonymous with activities that uphold <strong>the</strong> university’s,<br />
and by extension its faculties’, mandate towards <strong>the</strong> expansion<br />
and promotion <strong>of</strong> pursuits <strong>of</strong> an academic nature; and that as<br />
such persons <strong>the</strong>rein should aspire to conduct <strong>the</strong>mselves in a<br />
manner that may be considered socially acceptable. <strong>The</strong>refore,<br />
wholesale and/or blatant disregard for <strong>the</strong> stipulations made<br />
herein may result in <strong>the</strong> application <strong>of</strong> disciplinary action.<br />
CoDE oF CoNDuCT<br />
(a) Areas surrounding lecture rooms and <strong>of</strong>fices are designated<br />
quiet zones. <strong>St</strong>udents shall <strong>the</strong>refore refrain from engaging<br />
in loud conversation or any o<strong>the</strong>r noise -generating activity<br />
that may cause a disturbance. This includes, but is not<br />
restricted to singing, recitations, preaching, loud praying,<br />
<strong>the</strong> use <strong>of</strong> noise-emitting electronic equipment (i.e. radios,<br />
phones, etc.), and romping and playing <strong>of</strong> physical games<br />
(e.g. scrimmage). Persons are also to refrain from <strong>the</strong> use <strong>of</strong><br />
violent and <strong>of</strong>fensive language.<br />
(b) <strong>The</strong> <strong>Faculty</strong>’s space shall be considered as meant for<br />
activities <strong>of</strong> an academic nature. <strong>The</strong> facilities provided<br />
<strong>the</strong>rein should <strong>the</strong>refore be utilized appropriately and in<br />
<strong>the</strong>ir rightful fashion.<br />
(c) Persons shall refrain from engaging in behaviour not<br />
suited for <strong>the</strong> <strong>Faculty</strong>’s space, this being inclusive <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />
restrooms. This includes, but is not limited to lying down or<br />
sleeping on <strong>the</strong> furniture, public grooming, and <strong>the</strong> playing<br />
<strong>of</strong> games such as cards, dominoes and o<strong>the</strong>r such board<br />
games. Persons shall also refrain from engaging in any<br />
activity which amounts to an inappropriate public display<br />
<strong>of</strong> affection.<br />
(d) Persons shall refrain from lingering or congregating along<br />
designated pathways in a manner that may obstruct free<br />
movement along <strong>the</strong>m. This includes <strong>the</strong> sitting on <strong>of</strong> stairs<br />
and railings. Additionally, persons shall avoid walking in<br />
or through gardens and related lawns. <strong>The</strong>re shall also be<br />
no riding on <strong>the</strong> pathways, except in <strong>the</strong> case <strong>of</strong> disabled<br />
persons who utilize mobility aids.<br />
(e) Persons are not to remove furniture from <strong>the</strong>ir prescribed<br />
locations. This includes removing chairs and/or tables from<br />
classrooms, benches from usual positions, etc. An exception<br />
may be made in <strong>the</strong> case where <strong>the</strong> movement <strong>of</strong> furniture<br />
is necessary to facilitate <strong>the</strong> instructional programme/<br />
process, so long as <strong>the</strong> furniture is replaced in its original<br />
position <strong>the</strong>reafter.<br />
(f ) Persons, in adhering to this General Code <strong>of</strong> Conduct, shall<br />
also be careful to abide by <strong>the</strong> stipulations <strong>of</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r such<br />
<strong>Faculty</strong> guidelines/policies.<br />

PrOgrAMMES IN THE<br />
FACULTY OF SOCIAL<br />
SCIENCES<br />
Outlined below are some <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> general regulations which<br />
govern <strong>the</strong> graduate programmes <strong>of</strong>fered by <strong>the</strong> <strong>Faculty</strong> <strong>of</strong> Social<br />
Sciences. <strong>The</strong>se regulations are not exhaustive, and students<br />
are reminded to refer to “<strong>The</strong> <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>West</strong> <strong>Indies</strong><br />
Regulations for Graduate Diplomas and Degrees”, for <strong>University</strong><br />
regulations. Also, certain programmes may have programme<br />
specific regulations. Such regulations can be found in <strong>the</strong> sections<br />
dealing with <strong>the</strong> particular programme.<br />
ENTrY rEqUIrEMENTS<br />
qUALIFICATIONS FOr ADMISSION TO<br />
DIPLOMA PrOgrAMMES<br />
To be admitted to <strong>the</strong> prescribed course <strong>of</strong> study for <strong>the</strong><br />
Postgraduate Diploma, candidates must<br />
i. hold a bachelor’s degree from an approved university.<br />
ii. normally <strong>the</strong> class <strong>of</strong> degree should be at least lower second<br />
class honours.<br />
iii. in some programmes, practical experience or o<strong>the</strong>r<br />
qualifications <strong>of</strong> special relevance to <strong>the</strong> course programme<br />
may be required.<br />
iv. in some programmes, applicants may have to write an<br />
entrance examination.<br />
qUALIFICATIONS FOr ADMISSION TO M.SC.<br />
PrOgrAMMES<br />
To be admitted to <strong>the</strong> prescribed course <strong>of</strong> study for <strong>the</strong> M.Sc.,<br />
candidates must:<br />
i. hold a bachelor’s degree from an approved university.<br />
ii. normally <strong>the</strong> class <strong>of</strong> degree should be at least lower second<br />
class honours.<br />
iii. in some programmes, practical experience or o<strong>the</strong>r<br />
qualifications <strong>of</strong> special relevance to <strong>the</strong> course programme<br />
may be required.<br />
iv. in some programmes, applicants may have to write an<br />
entrance examination or may have to do qualifying courses.<br />
in <strong>the</strong> latter instance, that student will be deemed to be a<br />
qualifying student.<br />
