COUrSE DESCrIPTION: <strong>The</strong> aim <strong>of</strong> this course is to deepen <strong>the</strong><br />
students’ understanding <strong>of</strong> economics and to introduce <strong>the</strong>m<br />
to selected topics in advanced microeconomics. <strong>The</strong> course will<br />
focus on those areas likely to be most useful to students in <strong>the</strong><br />
design and evaluation <strong>of</strong> economic policy as well as in future<br />

macro-economic concerns <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Small Open Economy. It is<br />
designed to equip students with a working knowledge <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />
key macro-issues which confront policy makers in this type <strong>of</strong><br />
economy. <strong>St</strong>udents should have completed a full year’s course<br />
in macroeconomics at <strong>the</strong> intermediate level, and similar level<br />
courses in International Trade and Finance and Public Finance.<br />

COUrSE DESCrIPTION: This course aims at providing students<br />
with a distinct perspective on <strong>the</strong> experience <strong>of</strong> development in<br />
<strong>the</strong> Caribbean. After a brief consideration <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> basic strategies<br />
<strong>of</strong> development, students will be introduced to a number <strong>of</strong><br />
issues that have characterised <strong>the</strong> experience <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> region.<br />
<strong>The</strong>se include <strong>the</strong> issues <strong>of</strong> vulnerability associated with size,<br />
but will also touch on <strong>the</strong> important questions <strong>of</strong> culture and<br />
institutions.<br />

COUrSE DESCrIPTION: To create appreciation <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> importance<br />
<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> philosophy <strong>of</strong> science in <strong>the</strong> context <strong>of</strong> research designs;<br />
to empower students in <strong>the</strong>ir quest to undertake survey<br />
research focusing on <strong>the</strong> analysis <strong>of</strong> economic problems and<br />
facilitating economic decision-making to introduce students to<br />
<strong>the</strong> elements <strong>of</strong> survey sampling, its rationale, its applications<br />
and issues surrounding <strong>the</strong> interpretation <strong>of</strong> results.<br />

COUrSE DESCrIPTION: This course aims at raising <strong>the</strong> level <strong>of</strong><br />
consciousness <strong>of</strong> students about how scientific investigation <strong>of</strong><br />
economic issues is carried out. <strong>The</strong> course examines competing<br />
methodological approaches and seeks to improve <strong>the</strong> level <strong>of</strong><br />
discernment which students bring to <strong>the</strong>ir graduate study <strong>of</strong><br />
economics.<br />

policy-making and forecasting. It assumes some undergraduate<br />
training in econometric methods to <strong>the</strong> level <strong>of</strong> EC36C<br />
(Econometrics I).<br />

COUrSE TITLE: HEALTH ECONOMICS<br />

COUrSE DESCrIPTION: <strong>The</strong> intention is to make it possible for<br />
candidates wishing to do so, to pursue a health economics stream<br />
at graduate level on <strong>the</strong> <strong>St</strong>. <strong>Augustine</strong> campus <strong>of</strong> <strong>The</strong> <strong>University</strong><br />
<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>West</strong> <strong>Indies</strong>. <strong>The</strong> course objective is to introduce students<br />
to <strong>the</strong>oretical and empirical research, public policy issues and<br />
analytical techniques applicable to <strong>the</strong> study <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> economics<br />
<strong>of</strong> health and health care. To facilitate an understanding <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />
dynamics <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> health care industry internationally and in <strong>the</strong><br />
Caribbean.<br />
