THE FACULTY OF SOCIAL SCIENCES<br />

Ph.D Degree<br />

Ph.D candidates are required to successfully complete courses<br />

totaling nine credits at <strong>the</strong> graduate level.<br />

Candidates enrolled for a Ph.D degree must satisfactorily<br />

complete at least three research seminars, to be convened by<br />

<strong>the</strong> Director <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> HEU, prior to <strong>the</strong> submission <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Ph.D<br />

<strong>the</strong>sis.<br />

Graduate level courses will be determined by <strong>the</strong> Selection<br />

Committee in consultation with <strong>the</strong> candidate and will be<br />

determined by <strong>the</strong> background <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> candidate. M.Phil and<br />

Ph.D candidates who have completed <strong>the</strong> M.Sc. in Economics<br />

are encouraged to apply for exemption from taught courses.<br />

DUrATION OF STUDY<br />

M.Phil Degree<br />

Candidates seeking full-time registration status for <strong>the</strong> M.Phil<br />

will be allowed not less than two (2) years and not more than<br />

three (3) years from initial registration to submit <strong>the</strong>ir <strong>the</strong>ses for<br />

examination.<br />

Registered part-time candidates for <strong>the</strong> M.Phil degree are<br />

required to submit <strong>the</strong>ir <strong>the</strong>ses within five (5) years <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

initial registration.<br />

Ph.D Degree<br />

Full-time candidates for <strong>the</strong> Ph.D degree will be allowed a<br />

minimum period <strong>of</strong> registration <strong>of</strong> three years and not more<br />

than five years from <strong>the</strong>ir initial registration to submit <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

<strong>the</strong>ses for examination.<br />

Part-time Ph.D candidates will be allowed a maximum<br />

registration period <strong>of</strong> seven years to submit <strong>the</strong>ir <strong>the</strong>ses for<br />

examination.<br />

ExAMINATION<br />

M.Phil and Ph.D degrees are examined primarily by <strong>the</strong>sis, but<br />

candidates are required to satisfy <strong>the</strong> Examiners in such oral,<br />

practical or written examinations as stipulated by <strong>the</strong> <strong>Faculty</strong>’s<br />

Regulations and <strong>the</strong> BGSR.<br />

M.Phil Degree<br />

Candidates for <strong>the</strong> M.Phil degree must pass <strong>the</strong> required courses<br />

to attain a minimum <strong>of</strong> six credits. A student will have only two<br />

attempts at <strong>the</strong> required courses.<br />

If an Examiner <strong>of</strong> an M.Phil <strong>the</strong>sis deems <strong>the</strong> <strong>the</strong>sis generally<br />

adequate, but wishes to fur<strong>the</strong>r explore <strong>the</strong> candidate’s<br />

knowledge <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> field <strong>of</strong> study, <strong>the</strong> Examiner may require <strong>the</strong><br />

candidate be examined orally, practically, or by written papers,<br />

or by a combination <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>se methods.<br />

Ph.D Degree<br />

Candidates for <strong>the</strong> Ph.D degree must pass <strong>the</strong> required courses<br />

to attain a minimum <strong>of</strong> nine credits. A candidate will have only<br />

two attempts at <strong>the</strong> required courses.<br />

<strong>The</strong> Examiners <strong>of</strong> a Ph.D <strong>the</strong>sis shall, after reading <strong>the</strong> <strong>the</strong>sis,<br />

examine <strong>the</strong> candidate orally and may, at <strong>the</strong>ir discretion, also<br />

examine <strong>the</strong> candidate practically or by written questions or by<br />

a combination <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>se methods.<br />

<strong>The</strong> Examiners after such examination can recommend to <strong>the</strong><br />

BGSR any <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> following:-<br />

1. <strong>the</strong> degree be conferred;<br />

2. <strong>the</strong> <strong>the</strong>sis be amended, revised only or be revised and resubmitted<br />

for examination, as guided by <strong>the</strong> Examiners<br />

comments and within <strong>the</strong> period specified by <strong>the</strong> BGSR;<br />

3. <strong>the</strong> candidate submit only to a fur<strong>the</strong>r oral, practical or<br />

written examination within eighteen months from <strong>the</strong><br />

decision <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> BGSR; and<br />

4. <strong>the</strong> candidate be failed outright.<br />
