THE FACULTY OF SOCIAL SCIENCES<br />

Depending on <strong>the</strong>ir background, such applicants may be<br />

required to take additional courses as determined by <strong>the</strong><br />

Department Head on <strong>the</strong> recommendation <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Admissions<br />

Committee, prior to registration.<br />

3. Selection Criteria<br />

<strong>The</strong> final selection <strong>of</strong> students for <strong>the</strong> two categories above will<br />

be based on <strong>the</strong> following criteria:<br />

• An interview with Admissions Committee<br />

• Recommendations from M.Sc. or MBA Programme<br />

lecturers<br />

• Level <strong>of</strong> motivation, as assessed in <strong>the</strong> interview.<br />

• Pr<strong>of</strong>essional experience, where applicable<br />

• GMAT scores documenting a minimum <strong>of</strong> 550 total,<br />

including 20 in <strong>the</strong> verbal section and 22 in <strong>the</strong> quantitative<br />

section, in <strong>the</strong> cases <strong>of</strong> non-UWI international students,<br />

who might also be required to take an ESL (English as a<br />

Second Language) Assessment Test, where appropriate.<br />

Enrollment<br />

To ensure adequate student instruction and supervision,<br />

enrollment will be limited to at most 10 students entering <strong>the</strong><br />

programme in any year across all available disciplines.<br />

Programme <strong>St</strong>ructure and Content<br />

<strong>The</strong> Ph.D. programme is comprised <strong>of</strong> 6 four-credit courses and<br />

2 five-credit courses plus a dissertation worth 56 credits for a<br />

total <strong>of</strong> 90 credits.<br />

<strong>St</strong>udents will normally complete <strong>the</strong> Ph.D. course work and<br />

dissertation over a four-year period, and must complete within<br />

seven years, while also participating in instructional development<br />

workshops and contributing to undergraduate teaching within<br />

<strong>the</strong> Department <strong>of</strong> Management <strong>St</strong>udies. Beginning in <strong>the</strong> third<br />

year, students without teaching experience will be required to<br />

teach two courses each year within <strong>the</strong>ir area <strong>of</strong> specialisation,<br />

under <strong>the</strong> supervision <strong>of</strong> an academic staff member designated<br />

by <strong>the</strong> Department Head.<br />

All doctoral students will be required to take a common body<br />

<strong>of</strong> six courses plus two optional courses to build <strong>the</strong>ir research<br />

and analytical skills and to provide <strong>the</strong> requisite disciplinary<br />

foundation for dissertation research. <strong>The</strong>se required and<br />

Departmental Research Colloquium.<br />

Comprehensive Examination Process<br />

Each candidate will be required to write a Comprehensive<br />

Examination in his or her field at <strong>the</strong> conclusion <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

programme course work. <strong>St</strong>udents must pass this exam before<br />

proceeding fur<strong>the</strong>r in <strong>the</strong> program.<br />

Dissertations: Supervision and Process<br />

Each candidate will develop an original research project and<br />

carry it out under <strong>the</strong> guidance <strong>of</strong> a supervising <strong>the</strong>sis faculty<br />

committee. <strong>The</strong> committee will consist <strong>of</strong> a <strong>the</strong>sis supervisor<br />

and two readers drawn from this or any <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> sister campuses<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> U.W.I or from any o<strong>the</strong>r approved <strong>University</strong>.<br />

<strong>The</strong> dissertation will be defended orally, in an open forum, at its<br />

completion.<br />
