COUrSE DESCrIPTION: This course is designed to provide a<br />

comprehensive overview <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> literature within <strong>the</strong> areas <strong>of</strong><br />

financial accounting, management accounting and auditing. <strong>The</strong><br />

course includes group meetings, topic proposal development,<br />

weekly presentations, and individual research reports, submitted<br />

bi-monthly. <strong>St</strong>udents will be required to discuss <strong>the</strong> <strong>the</strong>oretical<br />

foundations <strong>of</strong> at least five selected areas, and to prepare short<br />

papers showing how <strong>the</strong> <strong>the</strong>ories reviewed may be applied<br />

to significant business challenges. Course participants are<br />

encouraged to draw on <strong>the</strong> expertise <strong>of</strong> faculty members both<br />

COUrSE DESCrIPTION: Advanced readings in Human Resource<br />

Management is geared towards students with an interest in <strong>the</strong><br />

Human Resource Management field and provides pertinent<br />

flexibility in its year to year <strong>of</strong>fering. Readings covered in this<br />

course vary from year to year and may focus on one or more<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> following topics: human resource planning, recruitment,<br />

selection, compensation, training and development and<br />

performance appraisal. As such employers’ needs, students’<br />

interests and business trends will influence <strong>the</strong> topic selected<br />

by <strong>the</strong> lecturer.<br />

MArKETINg<br />

COUrSE DESCrIPTION: This course assumes prior exposure<br />

to <strong>the</strong> concepts and tools <strong>of</strong> marketing management, such<br />

as database marketing, perception-gap analysis, <strong>the</strong> strategic<br />

manipulation <strong>of</strong> product, pricing, promotion and location<br />

variables, and <strong>the</strong> requisites for <strong>the</strong> creation <strong>of</strong> market driving<br />

enterprises. <strong>The</strong> course is aimed at providing an in-depth<br />

exploration <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> key challenges confronting <strong>the</strong> international<br />

marketing manager, in marketing across customs jurisdictions<br />

and cultures. <strong>St</strong>udents will address environmental, internal<br />

and external strategic dimensions <strong>of</strong> international marketing,<br />

including implementation issues. Special attention will be given<br />

to <strong>the</strong> export relationships and development initiatives <strong>of</strong> small<br />

and medium-sized enterprises. This course will encourage both<br />

<strong>the</strong> <strong>the</strong>oretical knowledge needed for normative understanding,<br />

and <strong>the</strong> development <strong>of</strong> a pragmatic perspective, noting and<br />

applying best practice. <strong>St</strong>udents are expected to engage in case<br />

study presentation, fieldwork, and <strong>the</strong> preparation <strong>of</strong> a research<br />

paper on a topic approved by <strong>the</strong> instructor. By <strong>the</strong> completion<br />

<strong>of</strong> this exploration, students should be much better positioned<br />

to become successful and resourceful international marketing<br />

managers or senior market researchers.<br />

MANAgEMENT<br />

COUrSE DESCrIPTION: This is an advanced seminar on<br />

financial management. It is intended to deepen and broaden<br />

<strong>the</strong> knowledge base acquired in all related courses taken earlier,<br />

in terms <strong>of</strong> its coverage, analytical content, and relevance to<br />

real life in <strong>the</strong> corporate structure <strong>of</strong> finance and financial<br />

management. <strong>St</strong>udents will re-examine <strong>the</strong> basic foundations <strong>of</strong><br />

corporate finance, as well as issues involving corporate decisionmaking,<br />

strategy and policy. Topics to be addressed include <strong>the</strong><br />

time value <strong>of</strong> money, capital budgeting, risks and returns, <strong>the</strong><br />

cost <strong>of</strong> equity, debt and preferred stock, <strong>the</strong> weighted average<br />

cost <strong>of</strong> capital, tax-related Modigliani-Miller propositions, <strong>the</strong><br />

meaning and measures <strong>of</strong> leverage and capital structure, effects<br />

<strong>of</strong> dividend payout, mergers and acquisitions, and financial<br />

derivatives. At <strong>the</strong> completion <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> seminar, students should<br />

fully understand and appreciate most <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> challenges involved<br />

in financial management.<br />

COUrSE TITLE: ADVANCED rEADINg IN MANAgEMENT<br />

INFOrMATION SYSTEMS<br />

COUrSE DESCrIPTION: Research in Management Information<br />

Systems is practiced by <strong>the</strong> Information Systems Community,<br />

a typically flexible collection <strong>of</strong> academics and practitioners<br />

attempting to advance <strong>the</strong> state <strong>of</strong> knowledge in Information<br />

Systems. This course provides <strong>the</strong> student with a deeper level <strong>of</strong><br />

insight into MIS Research and assists in <strong>the</strong> process <strong>of</strong> selecting and<br />

implementing a valid research proposal. <strong>The</strong> course will include<br />

<strong>the</strong> fundamental aspects <strong>of</strong> epistemology, including knowledge<br />

acquisition and management. <strong>The</strong> historical development <strong>of</strong><br />

MIS research will be considered, including research in traditions<br />

<strong>of</strong> positivism, anti-positivism, logical positivism, post positivism,<br />

and methodological pluralism. <strong>The</strong> research literature will also<br />

be presented through specific frameworks and classifications.<br />

<strong>The</strong>se will provide a range <strong>of</strong> perspectives on MIS, highlighting<br />

interesting current areas <strong>of</strong> research to provide students with<br />

guidance in developing <strong>the</strong>ir own research interests. <strong>The</strong> Internet<br />

will be used extensively for <strong>the</strong> sourcing and dissemination <strong>of</strong><br />

information and for data ga<strong>the</strong>ring and analysis.
