COURSE CODE: INRL 5001<br />

COURSE TITLE: INTERNATIONAL HISTORY AND POLITICS<br />

COUrSE DESCrIPTION: This course examines historical<br />

and contemporary discourses in international politics. <strong>The</strong><br />

introductory lectures on <strong>the</strong>ories <strong>of</strong> international politics and<br />

international relations set out <strong>the</strong> <strong>the</strong>oretical framework within<br />

which <strong>the</strong> various topics and issues will be discussed. <strong>The</strong>reafter,<br />

<strong>the</strong> course seeks to trace <strong>the</strong> evolution <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> international<br />

system through consideration <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> long historical trajectories<br />

between <strong>the</strong> Treaty <strong>of</strong> <strong>West</strong>phalia in 1648 to <strong>the</strong> contemporary<br />

era. We ask what <strong>the</strong> world is like today, why and how ongoing<br />

processes <strong>of</strong> structural change have made - and continue to make<br />

- <strong>the</strong>mselves felt. Some <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> key ideas and concepts include<br />

international peace and security; <strong>the</strong> implications <strong>of</strong> instability<br />

in <strong>the</strong> international system; globalisation; development and <strong>the</strong><br />

decline <strong>of</strong> Third Worldism; <strong>the</strong> rise <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> BRICS; <strong>the</strong> nature <strong>of</strong><br />

conflict, <strong>the</strong> so-called Clash <strong>of</strong> Civilisations, World Order and<br />

Disorder; Global Governance; <strong>the</strong> increasing significance <strong>of</strong><br />

social movements and o<strong>the</strong>r non-state actors; and <strong>the</strong> Global<br />

Financial Crisis. We end <strong>the</strong> course by contemplating <strong>the</strong> extent<br />

to which <strong>the</strong> New World Order is giving way to a potential World<br />

‘Dis’-Order.<br />

COURSE CODE: INRL 5004<br />

COURSE TITLE: INTERNATIONAL RELATIONS OF THE<br />

CARIBBEAN<br />

COUrSE DESCrIPTION: This course seeks to locate <strong>the</strong><br />

Caribbean <strong>St</strong>ates emerging from colonial rule in <strong>the</strong> post-World<br />

War Two period as new actors in <strong>the</strong> international environment.<br />

It will relate this phenomenon <strong>of</strong> post-war emergence to <strong>the</strong><br />

experience <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> “older” states <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Nor<strong>the</strong>rn Caribbean – <strong>the</strong><br />

Greater Antilles <strong>of</strong> Cuba, Haiti, Dominican Republic and Haiti. It<br />

will discuss <strong>the</strong> changing nature <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> regional and international<br />

environment in <strong>the</strong> period since <strong>the</strong> initial independence <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Commonwealth Caribbean states. It will also seek to discuss<br />

and analyse how <strong>the</strong>se states have initiated a search for identity,<br />

development and status in <strong>the</strong> contemporary global system,<br />

<strong>the</strong>se three aspects being seen as <strong>the</strong> core <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir external<br />

relations activity.<br />

Topics covered include: Historical evolution <strong>of</strong> international<br />

relations in <strong>the</strong> Caribbean; foundations and conduct <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

foreign policies <strong>of</strong> Caribbean <strong>St</strong>ates; <strong>the</strong> Caribbean in <strong>the</strong><br />

international system (regional, hemispheric, world-wide);<br />

contemporary international problems and issues <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Caribbean area.<br />

COUrSE CODE: INrL 5005<br />

COUrSE TITLE: POLITICAL ECONOMY OF INTErNATIONAL<br />

DEVELOPMENT AND OrgANISATION<br />

COUrSE DESCrIPTION: <strong>The</strong> course examines <strong>the</strong> functioning <strong>of</strong><br />

international organizations in <strong>the</strong> modern international political<br />

environment. It focuses on <strong>the</strong> major categories <strong>of</strong> international<br />

organizations, with <strong>the</strong> exception <strong>of</strong> international economic<br />

organizations o<strong>the</strong>r than <strong>the</strong> G-20. While overwhelming<br />

attention is paid to inter-governmental organizations, <strong>the</strong> course<br />

also treats with a range <strong>of</strong> heterogeneous non-governmental<br />

organizations. <strong>The</strong> course critically examines <strong>the</strong> role, function<br />

and impact <strong>of</strong> international organizations (and selected regional<br />

organizations) on global economic development; international<br />

peace and <strong>the</strong> politics <strong>of</strong> interstate relations. Special attention<br />

is given to <strong>the</strong> evolution <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> United Nations (UN) and its role<br />

in a post-Cold War international system. <strong>The</strong> course examines<br />

<strong>the</strong> challenges faced by international organizations in <strong>the</strong><br />

post-September 11 context, as well as <strong>the</strong> ongoing process <strong>of</strong><br />

restructuring <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> United Nations in particular. <strong>The</strong> course<br />

addresses <strong>the</strong> critical security issues that have demanded <strong>the</strong><br />

attention <strong>of</strong> politicians, policy makers, academics and <strong>the</strong> public<br />

in more recent times. Special attention is also given to <strong>the</strong><br />

emerging problems plaguing <strong>the</strong> global community, including<br />

<strong>the</strong> HIV/AIDS pandemic, political instability and social unrest,<br />

terrorism, money laundering, nuclear (dis) armament and<br />

environmental degradation.<br />

COURSE TITLE: INTERNATIONAL RELATIONS OF LATIN<br />

AMERICA<br />

COUrSE DESCrIPTION: This course serves to give <strong>the</strong> student<br />

an understanding <strong>of</strong> four areas:<br />

Relations within<br />

a. <strong>The</strong> Political Culture <strong>of</strong> Latin America<br />

b. Latin America in <strong>the</strong> World System: History,<br />

2. Latin American Foreign Relations: Organisation, Conduct,<br />

Process which entails<br />

a. <strong>The</strong> Formulation, Process and Management <strong>of</strong> External<br />

Relations,<br />

b. Domestic and External Influences on Foreign Policy<br />

c. Global and Regional Foreign Policies: Case <strong>St</strong>udies.<br />

3. <strong>The</strong> <strong>St</strong>ructural and Systemic Factors in Latin American<br />

International Relations:<br />

a. Models <strong>of</strong> Social and Economic Growth and<br />

Development,<br />

b. Integration Schemes and Trade Arrangement,<br />
