COUrSE DESCrIPTION: This course will consist <strong>of</strong> selected<br />

qualitative and quantitative research methods which <strong>the</strong><br />

candidate may have to use in his / her research. <strong>The</strong> student<br />

will be exposed to <strong>the</strong> use <strong>of</strong> computer programmes written<br />

for <strong>the</strong> selected methods. <strong>St</strong>udents will be required to submit<br />

a research paper utilising one or more <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> research methods<br />

taught in <strong>the</strong> course.<br />

ECONOMICS<br />

INTrODUCTION<br />

<strong>The</strong> HEU, Centre for Health Economics, formerly <strong>the</strong> Health<br />

Economics Unit, was established in 1995 as one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> research<br />

clusters in <strong>the</strong> Department <strong>of</strong> Economics at <strong>The</strong> <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> <strong>West</strong> <strong>Indies</strong>, <strong>St</strong>. <strong>Augustine</strong>. <strong>The</strong> HEU, is engaged in research,<br />

teaching, training and projects in <strong>the</strong> field <strong>of</strong> Health Economics<br />

and related areas. <strong>The</strong> work and research interests <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> HEU<br />

can be categorized into <strong>the</strong> following areas:<br />

• Health Care Financing and Health Sector Reform;<br />

• Health System Performance, Health Policy Evaluation and<br />

Health Impact Assessment;<br />

• Equity in Health and Health Care;<br />

• Social Security and Social Policy Reform; and<br />

• Economic Planning, Fiscal Policy and Economic<br />

Development.<br />

One <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> main objectives <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> HEU is to make a substantial<br />

contribution to <strong>the</strong> quality <strong>of</strong> life <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> people <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Caribbean<br />

and, as such, its work focuses on issues and concerns relevant to<br />

small developing countries.<br />

<strong>The</strong> HEU currently <strong>of</strong>fers <strong>the</strong> M.Phil and Ph.D degree programmes<br />

in Health Economics.<br />

OBjECTIVES OF THE PrOgrAMMES: M.Phil and Ph.D<br />

DEgrEES IN HEALTH ECONOMICS<br />

<strong>The</strong> M.Phil and Ph.D programmes are primarily researchoriented<br />

degrees and <strong>of</strong>fer candidates <strong>the</strong> avenue to develop<br />

<strong>the</strong>ir skills in a number <strong>of</strong> areas<br />

On completion <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> degree programme, candidates will be<br />

able to:<br />

• Demonstrate extensive knowledge on <strong>the</strong> research topic;<br />

• Utilize appropriately <strong>the</strong> relevant research methodologies<br />

and techniques;<br />

• Critically analyze and independently evaluate <strong>the</strong> literature<br />

and material related to <strong>the</strong> area <strong>of</strong> study;<br />

• Contribute to <strong>the</strong> knowledge and understanding <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

subject.<br />

In addition to <strong>the</strong> above, <strong>the</strong> Ph.D candidates will be able to:<br />

• Produce and defend a <strong>the</strong>sis that is adjudged to be <strong>the</strong><br />

result <strong>of</strong> original research and an addition to knowledge<br />

and to be worthy <strong>of</strong> publication.<br />

ADMISSION rEqUIrEMENTS<br />

<strong>The</strong> requirements for entry to <strong>the</strong> M.Phil and Ph.D degree<br />

programmes will be guided by <strong>The</strong> <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>West</strong> <strong>Indies</strong>’<br />

Regulations for Graduate Diplomas and Degrees <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Board <strong>of</strong><br />

Graduate <strong>St</strong>udies and Research (BGSR).<br />

M.Phil in Health Economics<br />

Candidates seeking admission to <strong>the</strong> M.Phil programme should<br />

hold a Bachelor’s degree (Upper Second Class Honours or<br />

above) or its equivalent, unless <strong>the</strong> Campus Committee in any<br />

particular case o<strong>the</strong>rwise decides.<br />

Candidates who are registered for a taught Master’s degree may<br />

apply after a period <strong>of</strong> one Semester for transfer <strong>of</strong> registration<br />

to <strong>the</strong> M.Phil programme if, in <strong>the</strong> opinion <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Director <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> HEU, <strong>the</strong> candidates have shown evidence <strong>of</strong> having <strong>the</strong><br />

qualifications necessary for writing <strong>the</strong> <strong>the</strong>sis for <strong>the</strong> M.Phil.<br />

<strong>The</strong> general regulations specified by <strong>the</strong> BGSR will apply to <strong>the</strong><br />

M.Phil degree programme in Health Economics.<br />

Ph.D. in Health Economics<br />

Candidates seeking admission to <strong>the</strong> Ph.D programme should<br />

hold a Master’s degree or equivalent from an approved<br />

<strong>University</strong> with a specialty in <strong>the</strong> area <strong>of</strong> study.<br />

Candidates who are registered in <strong>the</strong> M.Phil degree programme<br />

and have met <strong>the</strong> requirements for upgrading may register for<br />

<strong>the</strong> Ph.D programme as specified by <strong>the</strong> BGSR.<br />

Candidates possessing such o<strong>the</strong>r qualifications and experience<br />

as <strong>the</strong> BGSR may approve.<br />

Applicants to both <strong>the</strong> M.Phil and Ph.D degree programmes<br />

are also required to submit appropriate research proposals in<br />

<strong>the</strong> areas <strong>the</strong>y wish to pursue, which will be considered by <strong>the</strong><br />

HEU’s Selection Committee. Applicants may also be required<br />

to attend an interview prior to being accepted. A decision on<br />

<strong>the</strong> eligibility and acceptance <strong>of</strong> candidates will be made by <strong>the</strong><br />

HEU’s Selection Committee for approval by <strong>the</strong> BGSR.<br />

STrUCTUrE OF THE DEgrEE PrOgrAMMES<br />

In both <strong>the</strong> MPhil and Ph.D programmes, candidates will be<br />

required to undertake in-depth research in <strong>the</strong> area <strong>of</strong> study<br />

and to write a dissertation (M.Phil) or <strong>the</strong>sis (Ph.D) in-line with<br />

<strong>The</strong> <strong>University</strong>’s Regulations.<br />

M.Phil Degree<br />

M.Phil candidates are required to read for courses totaling a<br />

minimum <strong>of</strong> six credits at <strong>the</strong> graduate level.<br />

Candidates enrolled for <strong>the</strong> M.Phil degree must satisfactorily<br />

complete at least two research seminars, to be convened by <strong>the</strong><br />

Director <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> HEU, prior to <strong>the</strong> submission <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> M.Phil <strong>the</strong>sis.
