THE FACULTY OF SOCIAL SCIENCES<br />

MASTEr OF PHILOSOPHY (M.PHIL.) DEgrEE<br />

<strong>The</strong> M.Phil. is for those who seek substantial competence in<br />

conceptualising criminological problems and subjecting <strong>the</strong>se<br />

to sound research design, data analysis and policy formulation.<br />

It is largely a research-oriented degree, possibly making <strong>the</strong> way<br />

towards <strong>the</strong> Ph.D. degree.<br />

In addition to <strong>the</strong> <strong>the</strong>sis requirement, students are required to<br />

obtain six credits from prescribed departmental courses and<br />

as well to present two seminar papers during <strong>the</strong>ir period <strong>of</strong><br />

study. <strong>The</strong> M.Phil. research <strong>the</strong>sis will be examined according to<br />

<strong>University</strong> regulations. <strong>The</strong> passing grade for coursework and final<br />

examinations respectively is at least a “B” (i.e., 50%).<br />

DOCTOr OF PHILOSOPHY (PH.D.) DEgrEE<br />

This is primarily a research degree and examinable according to<br />

<strong>University</strong> regulations.<br />

In addition to <strong>the</strong> <strong>the</strong>sis which must reflect original work, students<br />

are required to complete successfully nine credits from prescribed<br />

departmental courses, and as well, present three seminar papers<br />

during <strong>the</strong>ir period <strong>of</strong> study. <strong>The</strong> passing grade for coursework<br />

and final examinations respectively is at least a “B” (i.e., 50%).<br />

Assessment:<br />

In each <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>se three graduate programmes, students must<br />

pass with at least 50% in coursework and <strong>the</strong> final examination<br />

respectively in <strong>the</strong> courses taken. A student will be allowed<br />

to repeat any failed course only once. According to <strong>University</strong><br />

regulations, a student may be asked to withdraw from <strong>the</strong><br />

programme if his or her rate <strong>of</strong> progress is deemed unsatisfactory<br />

by <strong>the</strong> supervisor.<br />

Advisory Committees from both internal and external sources<br />

will be established to guide graduate students in <strong>the</strong> most<br />

appropriate manner. For example, if part <strong>of</strong> a student’s research<br />

interest is in an area which does not fully match current staff<br />

expertise, an appropriate expert from outside <strong>the</strong> faculty may<br />

be invited to join <strong>the</strong> advisory committee.<br />

Upgrade<br />

A student registered for <strong>the</strong> M.Phil. degree, upon satisfactory<br />

completion <strong>of</strong> all courses and satisfactory research work on <strong>the</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong>sis, may be allowed to submit a proposal and make an oral<br />

presentation for upgrade to <strong>the</strong> Ph.D. degree.<br />

qualifications for Admission:<br />

MASTEr OF SCIENCE (M.SC.) DEgrEE<br />

A good undergraduate degree in <strong>the</strong> social sciences, preferably<br />

at least an upper second class honours in sociology, psychology,<br />

social work or in any discipline considered relevant. Depending<br />

on <strong>the</strong>ir class <strong>of</strong> degree and/or level <strong>of</strong> relevant experience,<br />

applicants may be required to complete some qualifying courses<br />

in <strong>the</strong> Department.<br />

MASTEr OF PHILOSOPHY (M.PHIL.) DEgrEE<br />

At least an upper second class honours degree in sociology,<br />

psychology, social work or in any discipline considered relevant.<br />

Relevant experience or some pro<strong>of</strong> <strong>of</strong> research competence will<br />

be favourably considered alongside <strong>the</strong> undergraduate degree.<br />

Depending on <strong>the</strong>ir class <strong>of</strong> degree and/or relevant experience,<br />

applicants may be required to complete some qualifying<br />

courses.<br />

DOCTOr OF PHILOSOPHY (PH.D.) DEgrEE<br />

Acceptance to <strong>the</strong> Doctor <strong>of</strong> Philosophy (Ph.D.) degree will be<br />

according to <strong>the</strong> following <strong>University</strong> regulations:<br />

(a) Persons holding approved graduate degrees awarded<br />

primarily for research;<br />

(b) Persons holding a taught Master’s degree from <strong>The</strong> UWI or<br />

ano<strong>the</strong>r approved <strong>University</strong>, provided that <strong>the</strong> Master’s<br />

programme included a research component <strong>of</strong> at least 25%<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> total credit rating and <strong>the</strong> applicant achieved at least<br />

a B+ average or its equivalent;<br />

(c) Persons registered in M.Phil. degree programmes <strong>of</strong> <strong>The</strong><br />

UWI who have met <strong>the</strong> requirements for upgrading <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

registration, as stipulated by <strong>the</strong> Board for Graduate <strong>St</strong>udies<br />

and Research;<br />

(d) Persons possessing such o<strong>the</strong>r qualifications and experience<br />

as <strong>the</strong> Board for Graduate <strong>St</strong>udies and Research may<br />

approve.<br />

qualifying <strong>St</strong>udents<br />

This category means those applicants who are required to register<br />

as qualifying students and who must successfully pass prescribed<br />

qualifying examinations within two semesters (if full-time) or four<br />

semesters (if part-time.) <strong>The</strong> same pass mark (50%) is required for<br />

all such qualifying courses.<br />

Course Content<br />

Emphasis has been placed on having course content relevant to<br />

contemporary concerns such as <strong>the</strong> police and <strong>the</strong> community,<br />

prisoner recidivism and re-<strong>of</strong>fending, alternatives to punishment,<br />

pr<strong>of</strong>essional ethics and interpersonal skills, <strong>the</strong> linkage <strong>of</strong><br />

criminological research with public policy, etc. <strong>The</strong> programme<br />

will naturally emphasise Caribbean concerns and research, but<br />

at <strong>the</strong> same time lodge such concerns in an international context<br />

with respect to both <strong>the</strong>ory, research and public policy. <strong>The</strong> major<br />

controversies and dilemmas facing <strong>the</strong> fields <strong>of</strong> criminology and<br />

criminal justice will also be presented (e.g., alternatives to prison,<br />

<strong>the</strong> adversarial system <strong>of</strong> justice, jury trials, law enforcement vs.<br />

community policing, etc.).<br />

Fur<strong>the</strong>r, through <strong>the</strong> relevant <strong>the</strong>ory and research, we will discuss<br />

<strong>the</strong> impact <strong>of</strong> crime and <strong>the</strong> criminal justice on ethnicity, social<br />

class and gender, and <strong>the</strong> implications for social equity and civil<br />

society. <strong>The</strong> programme <strong>the</strong>refore seeks to have a judicious<br />

mixture <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ory, research and practical applications as far as<br />

possible. <strong>The</strong> research project in particular is designed to help <strong>the</strong><br />

student link <strong>the</strong>ory with research and policy applications.<br />
