DIPLOMA IN MEDIATION STUDIES<br />

OVErVIEW<br />

<strong>The</strong> Postgraduate Diploma in Mediation <strong>St</strong>udies is taught<br />

through <strong>the</strong> Department <strong>of</strong> Behavioural Sciences, <strong>St</strong>. <strong>Augustine</strong><br />

Campus, UWI. <strong>The</strong> Postgraduate Diploma caters to <strong>the</strong> demand<br />

for rigorous standards, training and certification in mediation.<br />

<strong>The</strong> development and inception <strong>of</strong> a training programme in<br />

mediation at <strong>The</strong> <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>West</strong> <strong>Indies</strong>, <strong>St</strong>. <strong>Augustine</strong><br />

Campus, complements <strong>of</strong>ferings in <strong>the</strong> <strong>Faculty</strong> <strong>of</strong> Law at Cave<br />

Hill, at <strong>the</strong> Norman Manley and Hugh Wooding Law Schools<br />

and in various courses throughout UWI. <strong>The</strong> programmes plays<br />

a key role in building a network <strong>of</strong> experts in mediation who<br />

function as trainers, teachers, and supervisors in establishing<br />

<strong>the</strong> conflict resolution field and education/training services in<br />

Trinidad and Tobago. <strong>The</strong> programme also <strong>of</strong>fers a Master’s in<br />

Mediation <strong>St</strong>udies.<br />

THE AIMS AND OBjECTIVES<br />

<strong>The</strong> aims <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Postgraduate Diploma in Mediation <strong>St</strong>udies<br />

are:<br />

1. to educate pr<strong>of</strong>essionals in <strong>the</strong> <strong>the</strong>ory and practice <strong>of</strong><br />

mediation.<br />

2. to equip programme participants with <strong>the</strong> requisite skills<br />

base for effective practice in community mediation centers,<br />

and o<strong>the</strong>r conflict resolution and negotiation positions and<br />

agencies in <strong>the</strong> region.<br />

3. to promote a culture <strong>of</strong> peaceful, and non-violent, solution-<br />

seeking approaches to disputes.<br />

4. to develop expertise and capacity in <strong>the</strong> mediation field.<br />

5. to facilitate <strong>the</strong> growth <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> knowledge base required<br />

for ongoing training and supervision in mediation at <strong>The</strong><br />

<strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>West</strong> <strong>Indies</strong>, and in agencies in Trinidad<br />

and Tobago.<br />

On completion, graduates <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> programme would be able to:<br />

• describe and analyse conflict <strong>the</strong>ory and conflict resolution<br />

strategies<br />

• demonstrate requisite skills to intake clients, analyse and<br />

evaluate potential for conflict resolution<br />

• demonstrate <strong>the</strong> practice skills <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> generic mediation<br />

process<br />

• to apply <strong>the</strong> process in community, family, and victim/<br />

<strong>of</strong>fender disputes<br />

• demonstrate <strong>the</strong> ability and skills to develop and promote<br />

mediation and restorative justice processes<br />

• demonstrate <strong>the</strong> capacity to evaluate mediation, including<br />

demonstration by students <strong>of</strong> key skill sets and management<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> entire process<br />

rEgULATIONS FOr THE POSTgrADUATE<br />

DIPLOMA IN MEDIATION STUDIES<br />

1. <strong>The</strong> Postgraduate Diploma in Mediation will be awarded<br />

to persons, who, having completed <strong>the</strong> course <strong>of</strong> study<br />

prescribed by <strong>the</strong>se regulations, have satisfied <strong>the</strong> examiners<br />

in <strong>the</strong> examination for <strong>the</strong> Postgraduate Diploma.<br />

Entry requirements<br />

2. To be admitted to <strong>the</strong> prescribed course <strong>of</strong> study for <strong>the</strong><br />

Postgraduate Diploma, candidates must hold a Bachelor’s<br />

degree from an approved <strong>University</strong><br />

Additional Criteria<br />

Preference will be given, in <strong>the</strong> first instance, to people with work<br />

experience in <strong>the</strong> field <strong>of</strong> mediation.<br />

Competence in Social Work, Law, Business, Politics, Probation,<br />

Corrections, Psychology, Human Resource Management and<br />

Communication would be a distinct advantage.<br />

3. Part-time candidates shall normally complete <strong>the</strong><br />

Postgraduate Diploma Programme in not more than two<br />

(2) consecutive semesters.<br />

4. <strong>St</strong>udents are required to complete <strong>the</strong> following eight (8)<br />

courses:<br />

Award <strong>of</strong> Diploma<br />

Candidates for <strong>the</strong> award <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Diploma in Mediation <strong>St</strong>udies<br />

will be expected to pass all <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> required courses.<br />
