1 research Field<br />

<strong>The</strong> Research Field should include <strong>the</strong> following:<br />

• An annotated bibliography <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> field with emphasis<br />

on <strong>the</strong> area <strong>of</strong> focus <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>the</strong>sis (50%)<br />

• Acritical review <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> literature in <strong>the</strong> annotated<br />

bibliography (50%)<br />

2 Seminar Presentations<br />

• A <strong>The</strong>sis Proposal to be presented and defended<br />

upon completion <strong>of</strong> above.<br />

• M.Phil.<strong>The</strong>sis (40,000-50,000) words.<br />

DOCTOr OF PHILOSOPHY<br />

Full-time - Five Calendar Years<br />

All applicants for admission into <strong>the</strong> Ph.D. will normally be<br />

registered initially for <strong>the</strong> M.Phil. Degree, although students<br />

with adequate preparation can apply directly for <strong>the</strong> PhD.<br />

Candidates registered for <strong>the</strong> M.Phil. may be permitted to<br />

transfer to <strong>the</strong> Ph.D. programme by <strong>the</strong> School <strong>of</strong> Graduate<br />

<strong>St</strong>udies and Research after successful completion <strong>of</strong> an upgrade<br />

seminar based on <strong>the</strong> quality <strong>of</strong> a substantial paper presented<br />

at a Seminar <strong>of</strong> <strong>St</strong>aff and <strong>St</strong>udents and assessed by three<br />

approved assessors. Recommendations for transfer to <strong>the</strong> Ph.D.<br />

Degree will be initiated by <strong>the</strong> candidate’s Supervisor based on<br />

an assessment <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> scope, depth and <strong>the</strong> originality <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

research in progress. Such recommendation will not normally be<br />

made before <strong>the</strong> beginning <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> second year <strong>of</strong> registration.<br />

A review committee <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Centre, which will also take this<br />

assessment into account, will assess recommendations for<br />

transfer <strong>of</strong> registration. If <strong>the</strong> recommendation to transfer is<br />

approved by <strong>the</strong> School <strong>of</strong> Graduate <strong>St</strong>udies, <strong>the</strong> candidate’s<br />

registration for <strong>the</strong> M.Phil. will terminate and <strong>the</strong> Ph.D.registration<br />

will be dated from <strong>the</strong> date <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> initial registration <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

M.Phil. degree.<br />

Direct Entry<br />

<strong>St</strong>udents who are within <strong>the</strong> UWI Programme and may wish<br />

to move from one programme to <strong>the</strong> next may apply directly<br />

to any <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> graduate programmes <strong>of</strong>fered. <strong>St</strong>udents with<br />

sufficient background in gender at <strong>the</strong> masters level may apply<br />

directly for entry into <strong>the</strong> PhD programme.<br />

NB. Where <strong>the</strong>re is a difference in fees along with a change<br />

in programme, <strong>the</strong> shortfall must be borne by <strong>the</strong> student.<br />

Ph.D. Programme<br />

Applicants who have completed graduate degrees with a<br />

substantial research component and who have an excellent<br />

record <strong>of</strong> scholarship in <strong>the</strong> field <strong>of</strong> women or gender studies<br />

may apply for direct entry to <strong>the</strong> Ph.D. programme. This is<br />

approved by <strong>the</strong> School for Graduate <strong>St</strong>udies and Research on<br />

<strong>the</strong> recommendation <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> IGDS. <strong>St</strong>udents may be exempted<br />

from coursework on a case-by-case basis. <strong>St</strong>udents having<br />

an excellent record <strong>of</strong> scholarship in <strong>the</strong> M.Sc. in Gender and<br />

Development <strong>St</strong>udies may apply for direct entry to <strong>the</strong> Ph.D.<br />

programme.
