DEVELOPMENT<br />
Programme goals<br />
1. To improve <strong>the</strong> quality <strong>of</strong> gender-based analysis in <strong>the</strong> public,<br />
private and not-for-pr<strong>of</strong>it sectors;<br />
2. To demonstrate <strong>the</strong> breadth <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> field <strong>of</strong> gender studies, its<br />
history <strong>of</strong> thought and development, its research methods<br />
and its applications to <strong>the</strong> Caribbean situation;<br />
3. To provide senior pr<strong>of</strong>essionals with a range <strong>of</strong> modern<br />
techniques and an enhanced capacity to address<br />
developmental issues in a globalising world;<br />
4. To streng<strong>the</strong>n and improve <strong>the</strong> pool <strong>of</strong> academic institutions<br />
that train or teach women’s/gender and development<br />
studies at different levels;<br />
5. To inculcate attitudes essential for life-long learning and<br />
pr<strong>of</strong>essional problem-solving among graduates;<br />
6. To develop a cadre <strong>of</strong> well-trained gender specialists;<br />
7. To facilitate gender-based research and publication in<br />
diverse subject areas;<br />
8. To expose students to <strong>the</strong> importance <strong>of</strong> appreciating<br />
difference vis à vis gender and o<strong>the</strong>r social categories <strong>of</strong><br />
analysis.<br />
Admission requirements<br />
First Degree with at least 2 nd Class Honours or its equivalent (GPA<br />
3.5). Preference will be given to students with some prior training<br />
in gender studies. This could include <strong>the</strong> UWI Minor in Gender and<br />
Development or Gender <strong>St</strong>udies or its equivalent or at least three<br />
(3) relevant qualifying courses chosen from <strong>the</strong> following:<br />

• GEND 2013 Men and Masculinities in <strong>the</strong> Caribbean<br />

NB Entrance into <strong>the</strong> M.Sc. for persons not holding <strong>the</strong><br />
required degree would be based on <strong>the</strong> successful completion<br />
<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Postgraduate Diploma<br />
Course <strong>St</strong>ructure<br />
<strong>The</strong> M.Sc. programme is constructed as a two year part-time<br />
programme during which time <strong>the</strong> candidate will have completed<br />
thirty-six credits (36), consisting <strong>of</strong>:<br />
• 5 compulsory core courses (20 credits)<br />
• 1 elective course (4 credits)<br />
• 1 research course (4 credits) (linked to preparation <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />
Research Report)<br />
• 1 research paper/<strong>the</strong>sis (15,000 - 20,000 words) or an<br />
internship report supervised by a gender specialist - 10,000<br />
-12,000 words (8 credits)<br />
<strong>St</strong>udents will be required to do two core courses in Semester 1,<br />
two additional core courses in Semester 2, and <strong>the</strong> Key Issues<br />
core course in <strong>the</strong> summer term. An elective which must be<br />
related to <strong>the</strong>ir area <strong>of</strong> research specialisation, can be taken<br />
ei<strong>the</strong>r year. In Year 2 <strong>the</strong> student completes <strong>the</strong> compulsory<br />
Research Design and Methods course in order to begin <strong>the</strong><br />
process <strong>of</strong> researching and writing <strong>the</strong>ir research project/<br />
<strong>the</strong>sis. As part <strong>of</strong> this research course <strong>the</strong> student prepares and<br />
presents <strong>the</strong>ir first research proposal.<br />
During Semester 4 students will be expected to each present<br />
a seminar on <strong>the</strong>ir research and to complete and submit <strong>the</strong><br />
research project or <strong>the</strong>sis by <strong>the</strong> end <strong>of</strong> Semester 4.<br />

LEVEL 3 - M.PHIL. / PH.D.<br />
INTErDISCIPLINArY gENDEr<br />
STUDIES<br />
This programme is directed at students who are interested in a<br />
more research oriented degree. It replaces <strong>the</strong> existing M.Phil./<br />
Ph.D. Programme which has been in existence since 1997.<br />
Programme goals<br />
<strong>The</strong> goals <strong>of</strong> this programme would be:<br />
1. <strong>the</strong> development <strong>of</strong> a body <strong>of</strong> gender-based knowledge<br />
and research on <strong>the</strong> Caribbean;<br />
2. to contribute to <strong>the</strong> development <strong>of</strong> feminist <strong>the</strong>ory and<br />
methodology internationally based on <strong>the</strong> Caribbean<br />
experience;<br />
3. To mould a new generation <strong>of</strong> experts and specialists in <strong>the</strong><br />
area <strong>of</strong> gender and feminist studies;<br />
4. To expand <strong>the</strong> knowledge base from which to draw for<br />
teachers and researchers.<br />
