SOCIAL WOrK<br />

COUrSE DESCrIPTION: <strong>The</strong> primary aim <strong>of</strong> this course is to<br />

support <strong>the</strong> student in developing skills in critical thinking,<br />

reading and analysis and to apply <strong>the</strong>se skills to all areas <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

graduate studies. <strong>The</strong> course is compulsory but is non-assessed.<br />

An important aspect <strong>of</strong> this course is that it evolves into a Peer<br />

Review Group to provide <strong>the</strong> students with a forum for <strong>the</strong><br />

scrutiny <strong>of</strong> each o<strong>the</strong>r’s research proposals.<br />

SEMESTEr 2<br />

<strong>St</strong>udents will select an area <strong>of</strong> pr<strong>of</strong>essional concentration in <strong>the</strong><br />

second semester.<br />

Teaching in <strong>the</strong> second semester includes two ‘seminar’ courses.<br />

<strong>The</strong>se are linked with taught courses from each concentration<br />

and are designed to help <strong>the</strong> student pursue studies both at a<br />

more specialised level, for example by examining specific issues<br />

(such as working with children affected by HIV/AIDS , drug and<br />

alcohol abuse, project administration, budget management, and<br />

so on) and also, to develop skills in <strong>the</strong> application <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ory.<br />

<strong>The</strong>se courses will include both lecturer input and student<br />

presentation.<br />

COUrSE TITLE: ADVANCED SOCIAL WOrK INTErVENTIONS<br />

(CLINICAL PrACTICE)<br />

COUrSE DESCrIPTION: This course will examine <strong>the</strong> <strong>the</strong>ory and<br />

practice <strong>of</strong> a range <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>rapeutic approaches in working with<br />

individuals, families and groups and it will make use <strong>of</strong> ecological<br />

approaches to assessment and intervention.<br />

COUrSE TITLE: SOCIAL WOrK IMPLICATIONS OF HIV/AIDS:<br />

ISSUES AND rESPONSES<br />

COUrSE DESCrIPTION: <strong>The</strong> course will examine <strong>the</strong> <strong>the</strong>ory<br />

and practice <strong>of</strong> a range <strong>of</strong> selected <strong>the</strong>rapeutic approaches<br />

and perspectives, practices and issues and research findings<br />

for <strong>the</strong> effective prevention and intervention programmes<br />

for PLWHA. Participants will be required to engage in critical<br />

reflective practice in order to facilitate pr<strong>of</strong>essional growth and<br />

development.<br />

PrOgrAMME DESIgN AND IMPLEMENTATION<br />

COUrSE DESCrIPTION: This course aims to explore <strong>the</strong> issues<br />

<strong>of</strong> programme implementation through <strong>the</strong> examination <strong>of</strong> a<br />

range <strong>of</strong> issues such as development (sustainable development);<br />

democracy; transformation and change; participation and<br />

inclusion; community, group and organisational governance with<br />

special emphasis on <strong>the</strong> management <strong>of</strong> human capital in social<br />

agencies and communities.<br />
