NOTES<br />

1. Elective courses chosen must be supportive <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> student’s<br />

intended area <strong>of</strong> specialisation; selection is made with<br />

approval <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Head <strong>of</strong> Department.<br />

2. M.Sc. students will be required to satisfy <strong>the</strong> Department as<br />

to <strong>the</strong>ir reading pr<strong>of</strong>iciency in a foreign language.<br />

3. Specialised Advanced Readings require a comprehensive<br />

view <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> literature related to a specific area <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> student’s<br />

interest. In addition to <strong>the</strong> <strong>the</strong>oretical development <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

selected issue <strong>the</strong> student will be required to prepare a<br />

paper showing how <strong>the</strong> <strong>the</strong>ory may be applied to important<br />

business problems. <strong>The</strong> courses comprise group meetings<br />

early in <strong>the</strong> semester, followed by individual research by<br />

students. <strong>St</strong>udents are encouraged to draw on <strong>the</strong> expertise<br />

<strong>of</strong> faculty members both inside and beyond <strong>the</strong> Department<br />

during <strong>the</strong> development <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir papers.<br />

Duration <strong>of</strong> <strong>St</strong>udy<br />

4. <strong>The</strong> M.Sc. in Management <strong>St</strong>udies is <strong>of</strong>fered to full-time<br />

students who normally will be expected to complete<br />

<strong>the</strong> M.Sc. with three semesters <strong>of</strong> registration and must<br />

complete within three (3) years <strong>of</strong> full-time study.<br />

Examination<br />

5. Evaluation in all courses will be by coursework and final<br />

examination. <strong>St</strong>udents will be required to obtain at least a<br />

grade <strong>of</strong> B in both components <strong>of</strong> a course in order to pass<br />

<strong>the</strong> course<br />

Candidates failing more than one course in a semester or failing<br />

<strong>the</strong> same course twice normally will be required to withdraw<br />

from <strong>the</strong> programme.<br />

Award <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Degree<br />

6. (i) <strong>The</strong> M.Sc. in Management <strong>St</strong>udies will be awarded on<br />

successful completion <strong>of</strong> all courses and <strong>the</strong> research<br />

project.<br />

(ii) <strong>The</strong> M.Sc. may be awarded with distinctions if <strong>the</strong><br />

candidate attains an overall “A” average in <strong>the</strong> courses<br />

and a similar mark in <strong>the</strong> project.<br />

COUrSE TITLE: rESEArCH METHODOLOgY<br />

COUrSE DESCrIPTION: <strong>The</strong> objective <strong>of</strong> this course is to<br />

provide students with <strong>the</strong> basic tools needed to conduct<br />

systematic research intended to solve business problems. It<br />

provides a general understanding <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> design and execution<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> scientific research process. <strong>The</strong> key topics include <strong>the</strong>ory<br />

building, qualitative and quantitative research methods,<br />

<strong>the</strong> development and validation <strong>of</strong> measuring instruments,<br />

ethical concerns related to research, <strong>the</strong> internal and external<br />

validity <strong>of</strong> research data, and <strong>the</strong> effective communication and<br />

implementation <strong>of</strong> research results. <strong>St</strong>udents will conduct group<br />

projects <strong>of</strong> limited scope, in order to develop practical research<br />

skills. Emphasis will also be placed on critical evaluation <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> research reported by o<strong>the</strong>rs, and <strong>the</strong> development <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

students’ own research proposals.<br />

COUrSE TITLE: MANAgEMENT INFOrMATION SYSTEMS<br />

NO. OF CrEDITS: 4<br />

COUrSE DESCrIPTION: Management Information Systems<br />

constitutes a dynamic discipline. Academic activity in this area<br />

is related to a vibrant and prolific body <strong>of</strong> writing in <strong>the</strong> field<br />

<strong>of</strong> praxis. This course covers <strong>the</strong> entire range <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> literature<br />

on Management Information Systems, including core literature,<br />

and literature from cognate disciplines. <strong>The</strong> course introduces<br />

<strong>the</strong> student to graduate level work in MIS, and provides her with<br />

an overview <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> seminal papers in <strong>the</strong> field. It also reviews<br />

current developments in <strong>the</strong> field. <strong>The</strong> volume <strong>of</strong> literature is<br />

enormous, and <strong>the</strong> Internet and o<strong>the</strong>r online databases have<br />

facilitated <strong>the</strong> dissemination <strong>of</strong> literature. <strong>The</strong> student will<br />

be guided and supervised on a virtual tour <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> literature<br />

in Management Information Systems. A website will also be<br />

utilised for <strong>the</strong> course, which would act as a virtual forum for<br />

student participation. Topics to be covered include <strong>the</strong> MIS<br />

Forum , Research in MIS, MIS and <strong>the</strong> Organisation, MIS and <strong>the</strong><br />

Scholar/Pr<strong>of</strong>essional.<br />

COUrSE CODE: MgMT 6001 (MS62B)<br />

COUrSE TITLE: HUMAN rESOUrCE MANAgEMENT (HrM)<br />

NO. OF CrEDITS: 4<br />

COUrSE DESCrIPTION: <strong>The</strong> HRM function provides for <strong>the</strong><br />

effective involvement <strong>of</strong> people in achieving <strong>the</strong> goals <strong>of</strong> both<br />

managers and employees in contemporary organisations.<br />

Topics covered in this course include staff planning, recruitment,<br />

selection, compensation, training and development,<br />

performance appraisal, and o<strong>the</strong>r responsibilities <strong>of</strong> supervisors<br />

or HRM staff members. Course activities include analysis <strong>of</strong><br />

selected occupations, job evaluation, developing appraisal<br />

criteria, and identifying and justifying selection criteria. Ethical<br />

considerations in human resource management will be<br />

highlighted throughout <strong>the</strong> course.
