THE FACULTY OF SOCIAL SCIENCES<br />

POSTgrADUATE DIPLOMA IN<br />

TOUrISM DEVELOPMENT AND<br />

MANAgEMENT<br />

This programme is aimed at developing <strong>the</strong> skills set <strong>of</strong> tourism<br />

stakeholders who are directly interfacing with <strong>the</strong> region’s<br />

tourism product and are largely responsible for managing <strong>the</strong><br />

visitor experience.<br />

Entry requirements:<br />

Admission to <strong>the</strong> programme will be open to persons who:<br />

Ei<strong>the</strong>r<br />

• Hold certificates/diplomas that can be assessed by <strong>the</strong><br />

<strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>West</strong> <strong>Indies</strong><br />

• Have at least five (5) years managerial experience in <strong>the</strong><br />

hospitality and tourism industry and,<br />

• AresuccessfulataninterviewtobeconductedbyaSelected<br />

Panel to be determined by <strong>the</strong> Campus Committee on<br />

Graduate <strong>St</strong>udies<br />

Or<br />

• Hold a B.Sc. in Hospitality and Tourism or o<strong>the</strong>r Bachelor’s<br />

degree from a <strong>University</strong> or College acceptable to <strong>the</strong> UWI.<br />

Such applicants should possess at least a Lower Second<br />

Class Honours degree.<br />

Course <strong>of</strong> <strong>St</strong>udy<br />

<strong>The</strong> Postgraduate Diploma is a 24-credit programme that is<br />

<strong>of</strong>fered ei<strong>the</strong>r on a full-time or on a part-time basis. <strong>The</strong> course<br />

<strong>of</strong> study consists <strong>of</strong> five compulsory courses and three electives<br />

as set out below:<br />

Electives<br />

<strong>St</strong>udents are required to pursue any three (3) courses drawn<br />

from <strong>the</strong> postgraduate course <strong>of</strong>ferings <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Department <strong>of</strong><br />

Management <strong>St</strong>udies or any o<strong>the</strong>r relevant Departments on<br />

<strong>the</strong> campus. <strong>The</strong> chosen electives must be approved by <strong>the</strong><br />

Head <strong>of</strong> Department.<br />

Additional requirements/Information:<br />

• All students will be required to complete <strong>the</strong> year long<br />

Spanish course <strong>of</strong>fered for MSc. Management <strong>St</strong>udies<br />

students. This is a departmental requirement with no<br />

credits attached.<br />

• All students will be required to participate in a Tourism<br />

Developmental Workshop to be conducted in June <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

completed academic year as a departmental requirement.<br />

• <strong>St</strong>udents who have successfully completed <strong>the</strong> PGDip with<br />

a B+ average can return to do an additional eighteen (18)<br />

credits to satisfy <strong>the</strong> M.Sc. requirements provided such<br />

courses were completed not more than five (5) years prior.<br />

• <strong>St</strong>udents who completed <strong>the</strong> PGDip with a B+ average<br />

more than five (5) years prior would not be automatically<br />

admitted but will be considered on a case by case basis.<br />

• It is expected that students so admitted should complete<br />

<strong>the</strong> additional (18) credits in one (1) academic year.<br />

MSC TOUrISM DEVELOPMENT<br />

AND MANAgEMENT<br />

Programme Objectives<br />

<strong>The</strong> purpose <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Masters Degree is to:<br />

• Develop <strong>the</strong> analytical skills <strong>of</strong> policy makers and planners<br />

who are charged with <strong>the</strong> responsibility <strong>of</strong> planning,<br />

developing and managing <strong>the</strong> region’s tourism resources<br />

in a sustainable manner;<br />

• Develop a critical mass <strong>of</strong> intellectual capital within <strong>the</strong><br />

region that will help lead <strong>the</strong> way forward in developing<br />

innovative solutions, through research and scholarship, to<br />

address <strong>the</strong> many challenges facing <strong>the</strong> tourism industry.<br />

Entry requirements<br />

Applicants under this category should possess<br />

• A B.Sc. in Hospitality and Tourism or o<strong>the</strong>r Bachelor’s<br />

degree from a <strong>University</strong> or College acceptable to <strong>the</strong> UWI.<br />

Such applicants should possess at least a Lower Second<br />

Class Honours degree.<br />

• Preference will be given to persons with substantial<br />

experience at <strong>the</strong> management level in <strong>the</strong> Hospitality and<br />

Tourism sector.<br />

Course <strong>of</strong> <strong>St</strong>udy<br />

<strong>The</strong> programme is to be delivered on ei<strong>the</strong>r a part-time basis<br />

over two academic years or on a full-time basis over one<br />

calendar year. This programme carries forty-two (42)-credits and<br />

includes a mix <strong>of</strong> six (6) core courses and four (4) electives. <strong>The</strong><br />

course <strong>of</strong>ferings are as follows:<br />
