COURSE TITLE: INTERNATIONAL TRADE AND ECONOMIC<br />
DEVELOPMENT<br />
COUrSE DESCrIPTION: <strong>The</strong> aim <strong>of</strong> this course is to focus both<br />
on <strong>the</strong> <strong>the</strong>ory and practice <strong>of</strong> international trade as <strong>the</strong> latter<br />
relates to <strong>the</strong> issues and problems facing developing countries.<br />
At <strong>the</strong> <strong>the</strong>oretical level, some attention will be paid to general<br />
trade <strong>the</strong>ory. <strong>The</strong> course will mainly concentrate on trade policy<br />
choices that affect development at <strong>the</strong> national, regional and<br />
international levels. Particular attention will be paid to <strong>the</strong><br />
plight <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> small developing countries such as those in <strong>the</strong><br />
Caribbean.<br />
<strong>The</strong> objective will be to familiarise students with some basic<br />
concepts in <strong>the</strong> field in order to facilitate <strong>the</strong> teaching <strong>of</strong> trade<br />
policy issues which would constitute <strong>the</strong> bulk <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> programme.<br />
It should be noted that a wide range <strong>of</strong> trade policy topics has<br />
been presented and some priority selection may be necessary<br />
in order to transmit a desirable level <strong>of</strong> knowledge.<br />

SEMINArS<br />
Each candidate follows one Seminar <strong>of</strong> his/her choice. <strong>The</strong><br />
available choices are made known early in <strong>the</strong> first semester.<br />
<strong>The</strong> Seminar Course is year-long over both Semester I and II.<br />
COURSE CODE: INRL 5010<br />
COURSE TITLE: FOREIGN LANGUAGE<br />
COUrSE DESCrIPTION: Each candidate is required to have a<br />
reading knowledge <strong>of</strong> a second language to be chosen from<br />
Spanish, French, Dutch or Portuguese.. Where a student fails<br />
to demonstrate sufficient pr<strong>of</strong>iciency* in a foreign language,<br />
he/she is required to read INRL 5010: Spanish/French. Special<br />
courses; adapted to <strong>the</strong> needs <strong>of</strong> International Relations, in both<br />
French and Spanish, are available at <strong>the</strong> Institute.<br />
This is a non-credit course but is compulsory. <strong>St</strong>udents must<br />
pass <strong>the</strong> examination in this course in order to be eligible for <strong>the</strong><br />
award <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Postgraduate Diploma.<br />

Possession <strong>of</strong> a suitable qualification in one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />
recognised foreign languages, or satisfactory performance<br />
in <strong>the</strong> language pr<strong>of</strong>iciency assessment.<br />

MASTEr OF SCIENCE IN gLOBAL STUDIES<br />
ENTrY rEqUIrEMENTS<br />
To be admitted to <strong>the</strong> M.Sc. programme in Global <strong>St</strong>udies a candidate<br />
must possess ei<strong>the</strong>r:<br />
· A good Second Class B.Sc. degree (or a GPA no lower than 2.0) in<br />
International Relations or in a related discipline;<br />
· A good Second Class degree in any discipline with a minor in<br />
International Relations (IR) with a grade B+ average in <strong>the</strong> IR<br />
Courses;<br />
· Equivalent qualifications from approved pr<strong>of</strong>essional bodies. or<br />
· An appropriate first degree in any discipline and <strong>the</strong> Postgraduate<br />
Diploma in International Relations with a grade B average.<br />
It should be noted that <strong>the</strong> possession <strong>of</strong> a degree does not<br />
automatically entitle candidates to admission. <strong>The</strong> Admissions<br />
Committee may request an interview with applicants. Applications<br />
for admission should be made online at www.sta.uwi.edu not later<br />
than February 28. Late applicants are asked to consult <strong>the</strong> website<br />
for information.<br />
COUrSE OF STUDY<br />
<strong>The</strong> course <strong>of</strong> study comprises:<br />
• seven examinable courses,<br />
• a research paper approved by <strong>the</strong> Institute’s Director and<br />
• an enabling course.<br />
CrEDITS<br />
• <strong>The</strong> examinable courses carry 4 credits each (except <strong>the</strong> Research<br />
Methods and Proposal Writing Course which carries 3 credits).<br />
<strong>The</strong> Research Paper is 9 credits.<br />
<strong>The</strong> seven examinable courses shall be divided into:<br />
• Core courses - all Core Courses are compulsory<br />
• Electives - candidates are required to choose three courses.<br />
