tures of the <strong>Institute</strong> <strong>for</strong> <strong>Advanced</strong> <strong>Study</strong> were recalled: the concen-<br />

tration of both the faculty and their feu students upon investigation<br />

and research; emphasis upon the individual outstanding graduate student<br />

rather than on the mstandasdized products of university professianal<br />

schools;" and the points Flexner wanted stressedith respect to liberal<br />

provisions in salaries and security. Of particular interest are the<br />

following two paragraphs <strong>for</strong> the new in<strong>for</strong>natlon they contained.<br />

Students will be selected on the basis of their aptitude <strong>for</strong><br />

the uork rather thzn on the possession of <strong>for</strong>mal college de-<br />

grees. It is expected, of course, that wst of the students<br />

will enter vith Ph.' D. degrees or their equivalent.- ,,<br />

It is understood that ten students is the largest nlmtbex that<br />

any one has suggested <strong>for</strong> zny one professor to work wfth; and<br />

if a professor feels that he can uork better wfth as*few as<br />

five or six, or even with only two or three, it w ill be left<br />

to his judgment to work that way, Each professor w ill &ci&<br />

<strong>for</strong> himself whether to work with smkna'rs or graupe, or ta<br />

work with each student individually.<br />

An editorial devoted to an approving review of FLexnerts career in edu-<br />

cation, and to the neu experfmnt, ended with the follovfng statement,<br />

which appeared to be in the mture of an announcement:<br />

<strong>The</strong> <strong>Institute</strong> will not carry in its title the memory of kt8<br />

Founders, but they are to be congrztulated upon seizing such<br />

an opportunity to establish and perpetuzte such a Fellwahlp<br />

of ~ehalars.~'<br />

<strong>The</strong> Director received many personal messages which reflected<br />

sentimnts like those expressed by Dr. Weed, usually a reserved laan:<br />

You have achieved a perfect balance between the outstanding<br />

world figure and the best of the American school; it is the<br />

most desirable cdination that we could have <strong>for</strong> the inaug-<br />
