instead, it was a letter to trustees from the founders of a new insti-<br />

tution. (See Appendix Iff) <strong>The</strong> pseatr.ble stated their intention to<br />

establish an <strong>Institute</strong> of Higher learning or <strong>Advanced</strong> Studies, "to the<br />

endowent of which we prapose...ulti~tely to devote our residual<br />

estates, to be situated in the State of New Jerseyom No reference was<br />

made to Newark, or to naming the institution after the State.<br />

of the scope of the institution was given, except that there were to k<br />
