<strong>The</strong> third was young W. A, Campbell, Master of Fine Arts at<br />

Princeton mgna c m laude in 1930, presently Associate Professor of Arts<br />

half-time at Wellesley, end supervising the Antioch excsvatfons the other<br />

half. Tk,e consortiun of which Princeton wes part was then seeking renewal<br />

of its concession, and Princeton wanted Czmpbell to continue if it were<br />

extended. But Uellesley intended to appoint him to the Chair in Classics<br />

which became vacant. Accordingly Qr. Mosey persuhded the Director ft<br />

would be good if the <strong>Institute</strong> should appoint Campbell to a full-time<br />

position as a staff archeologist to work on whatever explorations it<br />

right bee- interested in. But Dr. Flexner, evidently realizing the<br />

<strong>Institute</strong> would not engage fn archaeology, presented the appointrent to<br />

the Trustees as one of a young classicist of Merftt's type, who had the<br />

capzeity to take his place in the higher ranks as had Mesitt. This was<br />

true enough. After the Board had approved the appointment, a bad hitch<br />

occurred. Flexner b d left all arr~ngements with &nipbell and Wellesley .<br />

to Dr. Morey, That worthy, cleiming that he was unprepared <strong>for</strong> the<br />

routine announcement, protested .that he had not in<strong>for</strong>med either of his<br />
