His great love was Gilman's Hopkins, the first xeal Amrican university<br />

in the European tradition, which he had attended as a youth.<br />

<strong>The</strong> next plan was one dated the 20th Januarg, 1930, drafted<br />

in Flexner's clear, simple style. It provided <strong>for</strong> the creation of a<br />

new university, to be established in or near Revark, znd to be called<br />

a£ ter t1:e Stste of New Jersey. (see Appendix 11). It would be entirely<br />

free from undergradute activities and teacher- training courses; there<br />

would be no professions, at least <strong>for</strong> the time being. Rather, it wuuld<br />

represent graduste study, and research in the arts and sciences,<br />

It is our belief that the sum which we shall ultimately provide<br />

rill be edequate to start and mintain at the highest possfble<br />

intellectual level an institution &voted to the central cultural<br />

<strong>The</strong> meaning of this sofmwhet cryptic charge upon the Trustees<br />

was to be explained in later doclrwlnts, but its smbiguity was dispelled<br />

only as the <strong>Institute</strong> <strong>for</strong> <strong>Advanced</strong> <strong>Study</strong> actually prepared to open, No<br />

discrimination because of race, religion or sex in admitting students or<br />

selecting staff wzs to be practised, Conditions <strong>for</strong> the faculty were to<br />

be such as to attract:
