These show that Dr. Infeld's name was held on a reserve list in
February, despite Einstein's request. By the April meeting, shifts
in ttie list of those invited left $2,200 available, which was then
obligated in other ways, ~nd no pert of it for Meld.
The budgets for 1934-1935 2nd 1935-1936 allocated $10,000 of the
$30,000 stipends for the School of Mztherratics for matherratlca?
physics, at the request of Professors Einstein and Van h'eumann (who
was devoting half his tfrrz to that field). Thereafter, at Professor
Veblen's request, the division between physics and nrathematfcs
was dropped. This occurred in fece of dfminkshed stipends for the
School, due to the Institute's strzitened fi~ncial condition.
