<strong>The</strong>re his most notable achievement was the management during<br />

the next fifteen years of n arly $50 million of special funds given by<br />

John D, Rockefeller, Sr., to zfd the development of medical education.<br />

He w2s supported and guided throughout by the excellent advice and<br />

statesmanship of his brothex and that other great pathologist, Dr.<br />

Welch. Most of the funds went <strong>for</strong> rratched grents under contract with<br />

medical sckools to capftalize the salaries of full-time clinicians &s<br />

teachers, researchers and practitioners in charge of patients in the<br />

schoolsm hospitals. <strong>The</strong> full-time program had been inftiated in the<br />

Bopkins School in 1913 <strong>for</strong> the first time in America, thus completing<br />

a sert made by Dr, Welch in 1907 and renewed in 1911 as between Dr.<br />

Melch and Hr. Frederick Gates, philanthropic and business adviser to<br />

Mr. Rockefeller, sr.18 <strong>The</strong> American Medical Association, which had<br />

also fostered re<strong>for</strong>ms in medical education, first approved irf it heart-<br />

ily, but then, after hearing from the h- eonsituency, opposed it.<br />
