As <strong>for</strong> hrschak's conpetence as an economist, (Frankfurter had insisted<br />

that mathematical competence was not enough) the Director said he had<br />

assured hiuself that econmists here and abroad comnended him. Frd-<br />

furter asked pointedly <strong>for</strong> Mr. Stewart's opinion; it was not <strong>for</strong>thcoming.<br />

Early in the arguuent Flexner agreed not to proceed until he<br />

had heard from the Warden of All Souls; this was because he nov had<br />

another candidate. Obliquely he revealed the fact to the lawyer. But<br />
