prove a basis in years to come of greater completeness<br />

<strong>and</strong> perfection. As far as it goes, the volume<br />

is quite reliable, having been founded upon well<br />

authenticated statements <strong>and</strong> facts; the author<br />

trying to avoid drawing on <strong>his</strong> imagination, which<br />

in some instances might have been excusable, <strong>and</strong><br />

might have added interest to the volume, if not real<br />

value.<br />

<strong>The</strong> book is unique in its make-up. It is neither<br />

strictly biography nor <strong>his</strong>tory. While partaking<br />

of those kinds of literature, such a work from its<br />

title must strike a mean betwixt the two. To<br />

strictly develop either line to its usual limits would<br />

make the work unreasonably voluminous <strong>and</strong><br />

bunglesome. <strong>The</strong> object has been to sketch the life<br />

of an honorable ancestor as far as known, <strong>and</strong> to<br />

preserve the lines of descent from him, <strong>and</strong> thereby<br />

show that <strong>his</strong> posterity, instead of defaming <strong>his</strong><br />

name, have in the main <strong>and</strong> to a wonderful degree<br />

appreciated <strong>and</strong> honored it from generation to generation.<br />

To do t<strong>his</strong> <strong>his</strong>tory <strong>and</strong> biography have<br />

been concisely, but we hope sufficiently blended for<br />

the purpose.<br />

It has seemed specially necessary to the author<br />

that such a book should contain, as an Introduction,<br />

a brief account of the Rise <strong>and</strong> Progress of the<br />

<strong>Huguenot</strong>s in France to the time of the appearance<br />

of <strong>Bartholomew</strong> <strong>Dupuy</strong> in <strong>his</strong>tory. T<strong>his</strong> is neces-<br />

sary as a beneficial effect upon <strong>his</strong> living descend-<br />

ants, by way of enhancing their appreciation of the<br />

causes which gave rise to the <strong>Huguenot</strong>s, as well<br />

as a due appreciation of their valor, character, <strong>and</strong><br />

sincere religious belief. Until one knows the foun-<br />

dation upon which <strong>his</strong> family is built, it is not<br />

likely that he will appreciate the fact of its having
