when suddenly a dragoon, mounted upon a powerful<br />

horse, placed himself in the way.<br />

other. "Now, Messire dragoon, I am one of the<br />

King's guardsmen, as you see by my uniform, <strong>and</strong><br />

I am on the King's business. You stop me at your<br />

peril !"<br />

<strong>The</strong> soldier drew back with a low bow. He could<br />

not read, but he recognized the royal seal, <strong>and</strong> the<br />

name of the great divinity "Louis." He would as<br />

soon have endeavored to dispute the will of a god.<br />

"Pass, Messire," he said, "<strong>and</strong> pardon my challenge.<br />

We are good soldiers of <strong>his</strong> Majesty, <strong>and</strong><br />

would be sorry to cause you any inconvenience in<br />

dispatching the King's business. If your lordship<br />

would like to stop <strong>and</strong> empty a cup, we shall be<br />
