<strong>The</strong>y knelt Avith sobs, <strong>and</strong> the h<strong>and</strong> of the dying Virginia.<br />

soldier rested in turn upon every forehead.<br />

As the last words were uttered he fell faintly<br />

back, <strong>and</strong> a sigh only marked the passage of the<br />

true gentleman from earth to heaven— from time<br />

to eternity.<br />

It was the bright sunshine of Virginia, the new<br />

l<strong>and</strong>, which rested last upon <strong>his</strong> forehead; but t<strong>his</strong><br />

was <strong>his</strong> home now, loved <strong>and</strong> cherished like the old,<br />

old home in France.<br />

He died as he had lived, a true <strong>Huguenot</strong>. No<br />

better epitaph is needed.<br />

In addition to statements made in *'<strong>The</strong><br />

Story of a <strong>Huguenot</strong>'s Sword," there are 1685.<br />

records preserved by the older <strong>descendants</strong> of<br />

<strong>Bartholomew</strong> <strong>Dupuy</strong> which throw light on <strong>his</strong> story of<br />

escape. <strong>The</strong> flight of himself <strong>and</strong> wife<br />

through the country, from the western to the firmed,<br />

eastern frontier, occupied some eighteen days.<br />

He was frequently interrogated as to <strong>his</strong> business<br />

<strong>and</strong> speed, but replied that he was the<br />

King's officer <strong>and</strong> was on business which dem<strong>and</strong>ed<br />

haste; <strong>and</strong> when more particularly<br />

pressed would add that he had the E^g's<br />

orders in <strong>his</strong> pocket. As he neared the<br />

eastern frontier, which was more securely <strong>and</strong><br />

strictly guarded to apprehend refugees, he<br />

was more frequently <strong>and</strong> pressingly interrupted,<br />

but with the polite brevity of one clad<br />

in a courtier's uniform, <strong>his</strong> word was a sufficient<br />

passport. It was on <strong>his</strong> last day's ride,<br />

<strong>and</strong> to the last stationed guard, that he had to<br />

expose the King's signature, attached no<br />

doubt to <strong>his</strong> certificate of aiqmesty, before he<br />

was allowed to pass. <strong>The</strong> book of Psalms<br />
