<strong>The</strong> ill-omencd crown of Charles IX. fell<br />

to Henry of Anjou (Henry III.), King of<br />

Pol<strong>and</strong>, the next brother, <strong>his</strong> mother ^s favorite,<br />

heard of <strong>his</strong> brother's death, he was only too<br />

eager to slip away from Pol<strong>and</strong> like a culprit<br />

with the pleasures of Italy for months after-<br />

wards. An attempt was made to draw him<br />

over to the Politiques, but it failed. He attached<br />

himself to the Guises, <strong>and</strong> plunged into<br />

the grossest dissipation, while he posed before<br />

the people as a good <strong>and</strong> zealous Romanist.<br />

<strong>The</strong> Politiques <strong>and</strong> <strong>Huguenot</strong>s made a com-<br />

1575- pact in 1575, at Milhaud on the Tarn, <strong>and</strong><br />

chose the Prince of Conde as their head, who<br />

returned from Germany, March 1576, with an<br />

army, <strong>and</strong> was joined by the Duke of Alencon,<br />

who was at enmity with the King. About the<br />

same time, Henry, King of Navarre, while on<br />

a hunting expedition, escaped from the vigilance<br />

kept over him by the court; renounced<br />

the Catholicism forced upon him on St. <strong>Bartholomew</strong>'s<br />

day, <strong>and</strong> joined them. He was<br />

making rapid progress in the South. Against<br />

t<strong>his</strong> new movement the Romanists seemed<br />

powerless. <strong>The</strong> court became alarmed <strong>and</strong><br />

iJyJigy finally concluded the peace of Beaulieu, May,<br />
