<strong>The</strong> Rise of the French Reformers (1512-33).<br />

<strong>The</strong> seeds of Gospel Truth, which pro- Rise of<br />

duced the great Reformation of the sixteenth ^«^o^-<br />

centur}^, were first sown <strong>and</strong> germinated in<br />

French soil. Before Martin Luther loomed up<br />

before the world in Germany, <strong>and</strong> before the<br />

burning desire for sacred learning had kindled<br />

in the heart of Zwingle in Switzerl<strong>and</strong>, the<br />

great <strong>and</strong> vital truths from which the Reformation<br />

sprung had begun to fall in France.<br />

Indeed, <strong>his</strong>tory proves that the French,<br />

German, <strong>and</strong> Swiss Reformations, though arising<br />

about the same time, were in their incipiency<br />

independent of <strong>and</strong> without any communication<br />
