the retirement of the scholars from Paris to
Meaux; the going forth of her husband to
war; and the departure of her youthful aunt,
Philiberta, to Savoy, she was made to feel
very lonely and deserted. She turned to Briconnet
for consolation, and the letters which
passed between them were exceedingly touching.
It was about a year later that the Bishop
sent her a copy of the Epistles of Paul, translated
and splendidly illuminated, as a present
to her brother Francis, and thus commended

which true religion is summed up in "Man's Poem,
sin and God's grace — that what man needs is
to have his sins remitted and wholly pardoned
in consequence of Christ's death; and when by
faith he has found assurance of this pardon, he
