<strong>The</strong> following letter was written by Johnchap.n.<br />

<strong>Dupuy</strong> of Kentucky. He was born in King<br />

William Parish, Va., March 17, 1738, <strong>and</strong> was<br />

a son of John James <strong>Dupuy</strong>, <strong>and</strong> a Baptist<br />

minister. He moved to Kentucky in 1784.<br />

It is probably addressed to Dr. William Jones<br />

<strong>Dupuy</strong>, born 1792, a descendant of Peter<br />

<strong>Dupuy</strong>, who lived in Dinwiddle County, Va.,<br />

as it was found among the papers of <strong>his</strong><br />

brother, Joseph <strong>Dupuy</strong>, <strong>and</strong> a copy forwarded<br />

to the author by Judge James A. <strong>Dupuy</strong>, son<br />

of Joseph <strong>Dupuy</strong>.<br />

thank you for them. I have taken notice of your john<br />

request to give you what information I could con- <strong>Dupuy</strong>.<br />

cerning the Emigration of the French refugees,<br />

which I shall take pleasure in doing <strong>and</strong> recording<br />

the noble deeds of my Ancestors who left their<br />

country, not fearing the wrath of the King "but<br />

endured as seeing Him who is invisible."<br />

My gr<strong>and</strong>father's name was <strong>Bartholomew</strong> <strong>Dupuy</strong>,<br />

he was born in France about the year 1650<br />

or 1653. At the age of 18 enlisted in the French<br />

army as a Common Soldier, served 14 years <strong>and</strong><br />

in that time arose to the comm<strong>and</strong> of Lieutenant<br />

<strong>and</strong> was often sent out on recruiting business <strong>and</strong><br />

had Captain's pay. He fought 14 battles in Fl<strong>and</strong>ers<br />

besides skirmishes <strong>and</strong> duels <strong>and</strong> the Lord<br />

preserved him through all. <strong>The</strong>ir manner of fighting<br />

was as follows:—Once a year they fought a<br />

pitched battle in Fl<strong>and</strong>ers with 100,000 men on<br />

each side <strong>and</strong> fought three days successively. <strong>The</strong><br />

first day the armies fired at each other the whole<br />

day <strong>and</strong> at night slept on the ground. <strong>The</strong> second<br />

<strong>and</strong> third days passed the same way until 11 o'clk<br />

a. m. of the third, when they laid down their guns,
