their impoverished condition; <strong>and</strong> by energychap^v.<br />

<strong>and</strong> frugal industry they soon found themselves<br />

on rising ground again. Some of the<br />

<strong>descendants</strong> who lived in the West were on the<br />

Federal side. In these wars many of them<br />

held honorable positions, as officers in the<br />

ranks, on the staifs of Generals, <strong>and</strong> a few of<br />

them became generals of forces.<br />

In the late Spanish-American War, a liberal Spanishnumber<br />

of the younger <strong>descendants</strong> volun-'^'^^"^*"<br />

teered, <strong>and</strong> remained in the U. S. A., until<br />

they were honorably discharged with their<br />

comm<strong>and</strong>s; some of them reached Cuba <strong>and</strong><br />

the Philippine Isl<strong>and</strong>s, <strong>and</strong> were engaged in<br />

battles.<br />

Like the <strong>Huguenot</strong>s of France, the <strong>descendants</strong><br />

of <strong>Bartholomew</strong> <strong>Dupuy</strong> have been com- sociai<br />

posed mostly of the better classes of society .^*^°^^°s.<br />

Wherever they have gone, they have maintained<br />

the respect <strong>and</strong> esteem of the commun-<br />

ity in which they lived, <strong>and</strong> have moved in the<br />

upper grade of society. Great changes take<br />

place in a people in one century, but in the<br />

ease of these <strong>descendants</strong>, more than three<br />

centuries have not availed to change the high<br />

<strong>and</strong> noble character, which from the first<br />

marked their ancestors. <strong>The</strong> explanation<br />

may be found both in their family government<br />

<strong>and</strong> in the principles which they have<br />

inherited.<br />
