was heard to shout, 'Elll, KJLll! Bleeding<br />

is as wholesome in August as in May.' '^<br />

Henry of Navarre <strong>and</strong> Conde were hurried by<br />

soldiers into the presence of King Charles, <strong>and</strong><br />

as they passed on from the Louvre where they<br />

were lodging saw several of their gentlemen<br />

murdered before their eyes on the streets.<br />

<strong>The</strong> King ordered them with oaths to abjure<br />

their religion. <strong>The</strong>y declined. With <strong>his</strong> eyes<br />

flashing with rage, he bawled out to them,<br />

**<strong>The</strong> Mass, or death, or the bastile.^' <strong>The</strong>y<br />

abjured, <strong>and</strong> were put under guard. Charles<br />

himself was seen at the windows of <strong>his</strong> palace<br />

with a musket in <strong>his</strong> h<strong>and</strong>s, <strong>and</strong> was heard to<br />

cry, "Kill! Kill! you <strong>Huguenot</strong>s." <strong>The</strong> massacre<br />

was kept up through the day. <strong>The</strong> headless<br />

body of Coligny was dragged through the<br />

streets of the city, then thrown into the Seine,<br />

<strong>and</strong> finally taken out <strong>and</strong> hanged by the feet<br />

upon the gallows, <strong>and</strong> a fire kindled under it.<br />

<strong>The</strong> King <strong>and</strong> <strong>his</strong> court went later to see the<br />

mutilated body. One of the courtiers remarked,<br />

"It smells ill." Charles, the King,<br />

replied: "<strong>The</strong> body of a dead enemy always<br />

smells well." In the several days of excitement<br />

<strong>and</strong> pellmell, Marshal Montgomery took<br />

down the abused body, <strong>and</strong> sent it to Montauban<br />

for interment. A description of t<strong>his</strong> massacre<br />

is given by De Thou, as follows: "<strong>The</strong><br />

very streets <strong>and</strong> passages resounded with the<br />

groans of the dying <strong>and</strong> of those who were<br />

about to be murdered. <strong>The</strong> bodies of the slain<br />

were thrown out of the windows, <strong>and</strong> with<br />

them the courts <strong>and</strong> chambers of the houses<br />

were filled. <strong>The</strong> dead bodies of others were<br />

dragged through the streets; <strong>and</strong> the blood
